Feeling Overwhelmed? Try the Take 5 Method

In the past week, I have had a lot of interesting propositions and ideas pop into my life. Each of these things is something that I want to do or a place that I want to go. The struggle is how to make them all become more than just dreams or missed opportunities. I know I'm not alone in feeling like life has a funny way of working out if you can manage to survive the stress and anxiety that's constantly being thrown your way.

I feel like I'm working more, giving less of myself to my church, my friends, and my family. Anxiety meds keep me balanced emotionally, but some days leave me feeling like I'm lacking energy to jump in and take action. My calendar is a jumbled mess of my schedule, my husband's schedule, family celebrations, and the schedules of my two children. We're becoming so busy that we're actually having to schedule family time or a quick trip away when doing something at the last minute used to be so easy.

It's much easier now for me to feel overwhelmed. Work, school, church, family, hubby's insanely crazy schedule, rehearsals, field trips, birthdays, meetings, events... all of these things and more have to be worked into a schedule and routine that works for me and my family, and some days, I feel like a ping pong ball. I am finally taking better care of myself and learning how to manage my time a bit better. I've also realized, however, that it's perfectly okay for me to TAKE 5 when I need to, and there's no reason to feel guilty about it.

Feeling overwhelmed? Take 5

Feeling overwhelmed? Take 5, my friend!
Yes- take five minutes and use those minutes however you need to.

Sometimes we need five minutes to not look at a screen. Unplug, turn your phone off, walk away from your computer... for five minutes. Do anything else- just don't look at a screen.

Take 5 by walking around your home or office, place of employment, or neighborhood. Yep- walk for five minutes. You'll get your blood flowing and you'll be breathing more deeply, which is oh, so good for your health!

Take 5 by grabbing a cup of coffee. Get your coffee and take five minutes to enjoy it while it's still warm!

Take 5 to meditate! You can pray, clear your mind, do breathing exercises or gentle stretches, no matter where you are! You can also visit this site to learn more about breathing techniques and what is the difference between breathwork and meditation.

Take 5 & text, someone, you care about. Take five minutes to send quick texts to friends, a partner or spouse, parent or relative. It'll make their day and will make you feel good, too!

Take 5 to dream! No dream is too big! Jot your dreams down, and work toward turning those dreams into goals.

Take 5 to pamper! Take five minutes to apply some lotion to your hands, file your nails or enjoy a favorite fragrance. Taking care of yourself is the best thing you can do? Take five minutes to schedule an appointment to get your teeth cleaned at Asha Dental. A cleaning does wonders for your self-esteem.

Take 5 to hydrate! You should be taking water breaks, anyway!

Take 5 to laugh! Find a silly video, watch a quick clip from a favorite show or read a favorite passage that makes you chuckle.

Take 5 to help others! Take five minutes to ask someone nearby if they could use your assistance.

Take 5 to smile! Close your eyes and try to keep a smile on your face for a full five minutes. I gaurantee it'll have you thinking about the things that make you happy!

Okay, I'm off to 'take 5' and then I'll be back to work! How will you Take 5 today?

  1. These are great tips. I take 5 by making myself a mango black iced tea, for some reason it relaxes me.

  2. I have to try this. This year has been harder than I ever imagined. I will not explain it here to the public but general anxiety and social anxiety affects little kids to more than adults will know. I had it growing up and now I am still on medication for it. it kept me from doing a lot of things with my life.
