World Mental Health Day: A Reminder That We’re Human, Too

October 10th is World Mental Health Day, but mental health deserves our attention every single day. So I may be a day late...Let’s talk about the things we don’t always say out loud.

The days when getting out of bed feels like an accomplishment. The moments when your mind won’t stop racing, even when your body is exhausted. The times when you smile, laugh, take care of everyone around you, and tell the world you’re fine when, deep down, you’re barely holding it together. Because sometimes, the strongest-looking people are fighting battles nobody knows about.

Sometimes, we’re the ones checking on everyone else while secretly wishing someone would check on us. We’re so busy being everything to everyone that we forget we’re human, too. The woman behind the smile.
As women, we wear so many different hats. We’re moms, wives, daughters, friends, coworkers, and the people others turn to when life gets hard. We remember appointments, worry about our kids, support our husbands, show up for work, and try to keep all the pieces of our lives together. But who takes care of the woman doing all those things? Who reminds her that she’s allowed to be tired? That she can have a bad day without feeling guilty? That she can love her family with every part of her heart and still need a moment to herself?

We put so much pressure on ourselves to keep going. We convince ourselves that resting is lazy, asking for help is weakness, and admitting we’re struggling somehow means we aren’t doing enough. But that simply isn’t true.
You can be grateful for your life and still feel overwhelmed by it. You can love your family and still need a break. You can be strong and still need support.
Two things can be true at the same time. Mental Health Isn't Always Visible. Not every struggle looks like tears. Sometimes it looks like irritability, exhaustion, withdrawing from people, losing interest in things you once loved, or feeling overwhelmed by the smallest things. Sometimes it looks like laughing at a joke while your mind is somewhere else entirely. Sometimes it looks like saying, “I'm fine,” because explaining what's happening inside your head feels harder than pretending everything is okay and other times we don't even have the words to explain how we feel. We just know that something feels heavy. That's why kindness matters. Patience matters. Checking in on people matters.

We never truly know what someone else is carrying. A little compassion can mean more than we realize. If you're the person struggling, please remember that you don't have to prove that you're hurting enough to deserve help.
Your feelings matter, even when you can't explain them perfectly.
Give yourself permission to pause.
If you're anything like me, you probably spend a lot of time thinking about what everyone else needs. But today, I want you to think about what you need, too.
Maybe it's a quiet cup of coffee before the house wakes up.
Maybe it's putting your phone down and taking a few deep breaths.
Maybe it's saying no to something because your plate is already full.
Maybe it's talking to someone you trust, reaching out to a therapist, or finally admitting that you've been struggling.
Self-care isn't always bubble baths, candles, and a relaxing day at the spa. Sometimes self-care is setting boundaries. Sometimes it's asking for help. Sometimes it's simply getting through today and giving yourself permission to try again tomorrow. You don't have to fix your entire life in one day.Take it one moment at a time.

A Reminder for Anyone Who Needs It Today...
You are not a burden because you have feelings.
You are not weak because you need help.
You are not a failure because you're having a difficult season.
You are not less worthy of love because your mental health isn't where you want it to be. You do not have to wait until you're completely broken to start taking care of yourself. Please extend yourself the same kindness you so freely give to the people you love. Talk to yourself the way you would talk to your best friend. Celebrate the little victories. Give yourself grace on the hard days.

World Mental Health Day is more than a date on the calendar. It's a reminder that mental health deserves the same compassion, attention, and understanding as physical health. Let's stop treating mental health like something people should hide. Let's check on our friends, even the ones who always seem strong. Let's listen without judgment, offer support without trying to fix everything, and remind one another that asking for help is a sign of courage, not weakness and let's remember to check on ourselves, too. Because the truth is, we cannot pour endlessly from an empty cup. We are allowed to rest. We are allowed to struggle. We are allowed to be a work in progress.

So, to the mom who feels overwhelmed, the wife who carries more than she admits, the friend who is always there for everyone else, and the person silently fighting battles nobody sees: I see you. Your struggles matter. Your feelings matter. YOU matter.
You don't have to have it all together to be worthy of love.
You just have to be human.
And being human is more than enough.
A question for you: What is one thing you wish more people understood about mental health? Let's create a space where we can talk honestly, support one another, and remind each other that none of us has to face life's hardest moments alone.
With love and grace from my heart to yours,
