As parents, we spend a lot of time preparing our kids for back-to-school season. We stock up on notebooks, sharpen pencils, buy new shoes, and make sure backpacks are packed and ready to go. But there’s one important item that often gets overlooked—period preparedness.
If you're parenting a tween daughter, now is the perfect time to have those conversations and make sure she's ready before her first period arrives.
The truth is, girls today are starting puberty and getting their first periods earlier than previous generations. Research suggests that factors such as increased childhood obesity rates, environmental exposures to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, stress, and lifestyle changes may all play a role in the trend toward earlier puberty. Some studies have found that the average age of first menstruation has dropped over the past several decades, with many girls beginning their periods around age 11 or 12—and some much younger.
As parents and caregivers, that means we can't afford to wait until middle school to start the conversation.
Creating a First Period Kit Together
One of my favorite ways to prepare a daughter for this milestone is by creating a first period kit together.
Not only does it provide practical preparation, but it also opens the door for meaningful conversations about growing up, body changes, and self-care. Instead of approaching menstruation with fear or embarrassment, you can help your daughter see it as a normal and healthy part of life.
Turn it into a special mother-daughter outing. Head to the store together and let her help choose supplies. Stop for lunch, grab a favorite treat, and make it a day focused on connection and confidence.
Or, if you'd rather surprise her, create a thoughtful period preparedness gift basket filled with essentials she can keep in her room, bathroom, or backpack.
What to Include in a Tween Period Kit
A good starter kit doesn't need to be complicated. Consider including:
A small zippered pouch or cosmetic bag
Several menstrual pads in different absorbencies
Individually wrapped wipes
A spare pair of underwear
A pair of leggings or shorts
Hand sanitizer
A small note of encouragement from Mom
A heating pad or warm pack for cramps
Most importantly, make sure your daughter has a discreet version of her kit that can live in her backpack year-round. Periods don't always arrive when expected, and having supplies readily available can help prevent embarrassment and reduce anxiety if her first period starts during the school day.
There's something incredibly empowering about knowing you're prepared.

Don't forget these products for Back to School.
As moms, we can't always prevent our children from feeling nervous about new experiences. But we can help them feel informed, confident, and prepared.
A simple period kit may seem like a small thing, but it sends a powerful message: "Your body is changing, and that's okay. You're ready for this."
This back-to-school season, consider adding period preparedness to your shopping list. Take the time to have the conversation, answer questions, and build a kit together. It just might be one of the most important supplies your daughter carries with her this year.
