Behavioral Modfication Therapy And Mental Health Awareness

This post is sponsored by BetterHelp.

For most, behavior modification comes naturally. As toddlers, our behaviors were often modified through praise or negativity. If we listened to adults, we would receive a toy, food, etc. If we failed to follow the rules, we often were met with punishment. This type of behavior conditioning extended as we became students: whether it was classroom behavior, grades, or home expectations.

Soon, we became conditioned to receive the smiley face sticker, reward, or A+ if we did what was asked. We even know this works in pets, as showcased by Ivan Pavlov, who showcased behavior modification with animals through his 1890's research. Later researched by B.F. Skinner, behavioral techniques and modifications are still being worked out today.

Yet, behavior modification doesn't come easy for all. Those with disorders, phobias, and disruptive behavior struggle and challenge the techniques that others easy accept. These persons might need a form of therapy to help them with the challenges they face. Using professionals who guide individuals through behavior modification therapy can help correct or redirect some of these challenges.

What is Behavior Modification?

It is the theory that unwanted behaviors can be changed by replacing or changing an individual's environment/ context to decrease unwanted behavior and increase desired behavior.

In the past, we most likely think of children who struggle with emotional outbursts due to situational or medical needs. There is much need for behavior therapy amid adults who struggle with mental or emotional health disorders, including anger, ADHD, and fears/ anxieties.

Aggressive behaviors, lack of impulse control, and fears usually cannot be controlled with regular behavioral methods, so individuals must turn towards the help of behavioral specialists and therapists.  These specialists help coach and challenge the individual to overcome the consequences of negative behaviors through therapy.

Behavior Modification Therapy

Therapists can work with clients so that methods can be created to counteract the effects of unwanted behavior. Eventually, individuals might learn how to replace these negative patterns with positive modifications so that the unwanted behavior disappears.

Whether the person is a child or adult, behavior modification therapy can replaced unwanted behaviors with a desired outcome. As children and adults continue to face the effects of the Pandemic, some of these undesired behaviors related to anxiety, depression, ADHD, and fear will continue to rise. Don't wait too long to address these behaviors, otherwise it will be harder to regain control of mental health and stability.
