Should I get a Siamese cat? Here’s what you need to know

Thinking of getting a Siamese cat? These precocious cats can be a wonderful addition to your family but can also be a bit of a handful. Here’s a useful summary of what you need to know before you bring home a Siamese cat:

Appearance

Siamese cats are undeniably a beautiful breed. They have an incredibly distinctive appearance, with bright blue eyes and unique coloring. The dark patches that Siamese cats are famous for are known as ‘points’. Points can be found on a Siamese cat’s ears, face, feet, and tail. Most Siamese cats have these, but some don’t have any at all. They are a medium-sized cat and have toned and athletic bodies. Male Siamese cats weigh around 3.5 to 5 kilograms, and females weigh between 2 and 4.5 kilograms.

Temperament

Siamese cats are very bold and friendly. They love human company and tend to follow their owners around constantly! Many Siamese owners describe them as ‘dog-like’ due to their affectionate and playful nature. These cats love to play, so they need lots of toys to keep them stimulated. They will also demand attention from you and won’t be ignored! Siamese cats are also known as lap cats and will insist on cuddling up with you on the couch in the evening.

Behavioral problems

Although Siamese cats’ sociable behavior can be a blessing, it can also be a curse for cat owners. They are a highly demanding breed and can become disruptive if they are left alone for too long. Siamese cats are prone to separation anxiety and can be very restless and stressed if their owner leaves them alone during the day. Siamese cats are also incredibly vocal, which can be a problem if they are constantly meowing during the night. Sprayingcats.com has a comprehensive guide of common Siamese behavioral problems and some useful solutions.

Grooming

Siamese cats are short-haired, so they have relatively little shedding. They are thorough groomers and take good care of themselves, so you won’t need to worry about brushing them too often. Still, make sure you keep an eye on the quality of their coat and give it a brush if you notice any matting or dirt.

Health problems

As is common in purebred cats, Siamese cats have certain health vulnerabilities that it’s important to be aware of before you adopt. This breed has a genetic vulnerability to conditions such as mediastinal lymphoma and intestinal tumors. Siamese cats are also known for their sensitive stomachs and food allergies. You should avoid feeding them overly rich foods, such as beef and chicken, as these can cause vomiting.

Contact a shelter or breeder to adopt

On the whole, Siamese cats are a beautiful and affectionate breed. Although they can be a handful, with the right care and discipline, they are a great addition to any home. If you are looking to get a Siamese cat, contact your local shelter or look online for a trusted breeder.

  1. An informative article. But I hope it said a bit more about their diet. I heard that Siamese cats need a protein rich diet, but you mentioned not feeding them chicken or beef. My girlfriend has a Siamese kitten and she buys Purina foods from Petcare rx that includes chicken or beef. Should I ask her to stick to fish based foods mostly?

    1. Hi, chicken and beef flavored Purina cat food is fine, but try and avoid actual beef and chicken.
