NICKELODEON’S TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: RETREAT DVD #Review + #Giveaway

When my sister and I were growing up, we were big fans of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Donatello 'Donnie,' was always my favorite! I was excited when I learned that Nickelodeon was bringing the revamped series to a whole new generation- some twenty years later! Now my son is a TMNT fan, though he's never really seen the animated series, he has only received some TMNT apparel and a few tame toys.

We were excited to receive the latest release from Nickelodeon's hit animated TMNT series on DVD! I have to admit that I was secretly excited about seeing how the series has changed.

Our Thoughts...

B was totally excited to receive his first TMNT DVD!

I told B that we could check the DVD out, but that we might not be watching much of it, depending on how I felt about it. I agreed to sit with him and watch a bit of it. We've missed out on the previous seasons, so we're a little late to the game, as far as what has happened within the story.

We popped the DVD in, and watched the first few minutes, but it didn't take long for me to realize that this is definitely not the same TMNT that my super conservative and protective mother allowed me and my sister to watch as kids. The characters and language, and the situations were just way too mature for my big boy. Within minutes, the turtles were pitted up against scary monsters (and by scary, I mean even I was sort of scared!), and I was hearing rude language that I don't want my sweet boy repeating. B was afraid to go into any room of our house by himself for the rest of the day, after just a few minutes of TMNT screen time. I know I made the right call by turning it off, and telling him that we could try it again when he's older.

The DVD is packed with action and adventure, and even a little drama and romance. If you're okay with your older children watching this, my guess is, they'll probably enjoy it, though  I think it's a bit on the violent and vulgar side. Use your judgement when it comes to what your kids are watching. We're too young for TMNT yet, but if your kiddos aren't, and you're okay with them viewing this show, definitely check it out!
