With the warm weather we've been having lately, we've been spending quite a lot of time outside. I love being outside, and so does my son. I enjoy gardening, landscaping, and making our outdoor spaces functional for play and relaxation. When we moved into our house, there was very little in the way of landscaping, so it was up to me to begin making this house our home. I have spent a lot of time working on our flower beds and front porch, but the back yard has needed a bit of attention for quite a while.

After our back yard was fenced in two summers ago, we had to re-think what we wanted it to look like. It's a small yard, and my main wish for it is to be a play space for my son. I do want it to look nice, as well, so last summer, I decided on adding a few things that would spruce it up a bit, one being a bench for my to relax on, while B plays in the sandbox. This year, I wanted to dress the space up even more, so I added pavers underneath the bench (to keep the grass from growing there), added flowers to the area, and I thought that some nice outdoor pillows would really dress the area up as well.

One of the quickest, and easiest ways to add color, comfort, and style to any outdoor space, is to decorate with beautiful outdoor throw pillows or outdoor cushions. Last summer, I had the pleasure of connecting with Brad at Pillow Perfect, who sent me a beautiful bench cushion and throw pillows for my front porch. You can read my previous review, here. I spent a long time pouring over the choices for outdoor throw pillows, on the Pillow Perfect website. There are so many gorgeous new designs for the 2014 season, that I really just needed to narrow it down to a color pallet that I wanted to work with in my back yard, and then go from there. Once I decided on red (with a little help from my hubby), the choice was easy!

I selected the Keene Cherry 18.5 Inch Throw Pillows, which come in a set of two. After I decided on a red color, I was able to shop by color on the Pillow Perfect site. I was shown a bevy of red designs in outdoor pillows, but this contemporary design really stood out. I loved the bright cherry red color, and the bold, mixed pattern, dancing across the pillow.

I had style and comfort in mind when I selected the Keene Cherry Throw Pillows, but I knew that I also needed to select a style that would be practical. Truth is, I have a little boy, who loves to get dirty when we play outside. He also loves to take little breaks from play time, to have some water, or a snack, on the outdoor bench in the yard. Though the pillows are brand spanking new right now, and super clean and beautiful, I know that over time, they'll become dirty. Pillow Perfect pillows and throws can be spot cleaned, with a mild soap, or can be wiped down. I know from experience with the set on my front porch, that they wipe clean really well!

The square pillows are a great size for this little two-seater bench.

The pillows add instant beauty, style and comfort, to an otherwise boring space.

It would have been easy just to stick the bench in this area, and leave it like that. My idea was to have a cool place to sit in the shade (this is under our big shade tree), while B plays in his sandbox, which I am way too big to play in. I like to be near him, so I can keep an eye on him while he plays. Adding pavers to the area was my idea, for keeping grass out, and saving my hubby from having to move the bench to mow. I added a little side table, a candle, a lantern, and planted some marigolds to one side of the bench. I also planted pansies around the entire base of the tree, and mulched it. The simple addition of these pieces, and a little landscaping, has made it an enjoyable little area for me. Sometimes I steal an hour on the weekends and sit out there and read... it's so peaceful. I'd like to extend the little paved area just a little bit, to make it larger.

We have really been enjoying these lovely outdoor throw pillows. I am hugely picky when it comes to accents, and have a hard time putting 'just anything' in my outdoor living spaces. I want what goes into any of our family's living spaces to reflect our personality and style. I know that if properly cared for, we'll be enjoying our beautiful new throw pillows for many seasons to come!
