Laughing Giraffe Books Holiday Review and Giveaway

Mommy's Block Party Holiday Gift Guide 2013

Christmas is just two weeks away and I am still finishing up my shopping lists. I have some very busy days ahead and know that my list of to dos keeps growing. While I am busy around the house, the kids are looking for things to do. B has become a very independent reader and chooses to sit down and pick up a book quite often, sometimes even reading to his sisters. I love watching them sit and share their love of books with each other and hope that this continues to happen as they get older.

Our selection of baby and toddler books is huge and because B has become such a reader so quickly, we haven't had a lot of time to build a collection of books that is for him, we are slowly getting there. Recently we were introduced to a company that has helped his collection grow with books that are customized for him and his interests too which has been perfect.

Laughing Giraffe Books was founded by mom and educator turned entrepreneur, Alexandra Morrill. When Alexandra wanted to share her love of books and reading, not only with her children, but with others, Laughing Giraffe was born. Laughing Giraffe provides hand selected, quality book sets to children with the hopes of creating lifelong readers.

I worked directly with Alexandra. How often do you get to work with the founder of a company? I think it is awesome that Alexandra takes the time to work with groups like MBP, it shows that she loves her company and wants to keep spreading the word about Laughing Giraffe Books. I truly appreciated this small gesture.

Alexandra first wanted to know if there was a specific collection I was interested in. I had briefly browsed through the choices and was blown away by the huge selection they offer. Luckily she also wondered if there was a specific child that I felt would best interact with the books and what the age, gender, and interests would be. The website is very detailed and let me select by recipient and gender. I decided that B would be best suited for receiving this review because he has become an amazing reader. I went back and browsed the boy book sets and found a few that caught my eye. I told Alexandra that B was very sports crazy and she quickly recommended a set that would be perfect for him.

Another cool thing about Laughing Giraffe is they offer two delivery choices- Gift Set (all books delivered at one time) or Book of the Month (one book each month). All of their book sets also include free shipping and gift wrap. Andrea let me know that our package had shipped in gift set delivery and would be there soon. I couldn't wait for B to get this surprise!

Our package from Laughing Giraffe Books is here!
I love the big blue giraffe, he really stands out. I also like how the logo is easy to read and clearly states what the company is-"Fun book sets that engage young readers".

B was so excited to see what was in the package. I sometimes tell the kids when we are getting something and other times I let it be surprise. This was a surprise opening and he couldn't wait to get into it.
As promised, a gift set and gift wrapped. It was a bit early for Christmas when we got it, but it sure felt like it when we saw a stack of brightly wrapped items just waiting for us. B's eyes were huge and he kept asking if they were all for him.

There was also a personalized note from Alexandra. Thanks Alexandra, I have a book lover who is ready to open some gifts!
Let's get opening and see what we find.
B was sent the "Baseball Greats" set.
Meet some of baseball's most interesting and important players, including Roy Campanella, Jackie Robinson, PeeWee Reese, Lou Gehrig, Sandy Koufax, Babe Ruth and Roberto Clemente. Known not only for their athletic abilities, but also for their character and contributions to others, these inspiring players hold a significant spot in baseball history. A perfect collection to share with baseball aficionados, or to introduce some of what makes baseball so great!

First book out of the wrapping was "Lou Gehrig-The Luckiest Man" by David A. Adler.

Second book find was "You Never Heard of Sandy Koufax?!" by Jonah Winter.
I love the cover on this book, it changes when you move it. B was really interested in this one based on the cover alone.

You must always browse through a book when you open it and look at the pictures.
Third book was "Teammates "by Peter Golenbock.
Fourth book was "Roberto Clemente: Pride of the Pittsburgh Pirates" by Jonah Winter.
This book was B's first read of the set. He was so excited to tell me about it when he finished and then tell his Dad when he got home from work.

Fifth was "Home Run: The Story of Babe Ruth" by Robert Burleigh.
B knows who Babe Ruth is and thought this book was the coolest of the bunch.

Our final find was "Campy: The Story of Ray Campanella" by David A. Adler.
The Baseball Greats book set has an assortment of both hardcover and paperback books by a variety of authors. B is a sports guy and while baseball season is still a ways away, this set really made him happy. He has taken some AR quizzes at school on a few of these books (AR quizzes test reading comprehension in a short and fun assessment). The cool thing about this is, most of these books are labeled in a higher reading level than first grade, but he mastered the quizzes he took without problems. He really paid attention while reading and asked questions when he struggled with a word. He was so proud of himself for reading them and passing his quizzes. I also took one of them when I had to read to his class, the boys were thrilled and really in to it, maybe not so much the girls though.

Laughing Giraffe Books are sets filled with award winners, kid friendly themes, and will satisfy every reader in your family. With over 80 collections for children ages 0-8, you can not go wrong with this company. B has been reading and reading his sports books from Laughing Giraffe Books and I could not be more excited to share such a great experience with our readers.
