We're Learning Italian with Little Pim DVDs! Molto Buono! #Review & #Giveaway #LittlePim

MBP's Back to School Blast

According to recent studies, research has shown that children who learn multiple languages, as opposed to speaking just one language, may have an edge over those who wait until later in life to be introduced to a second language. I am third generation Italian-American, making my son fourth generation. My husband's family hails from Germany. Between us, we have Irish, Scottish, Welsh, German, Italian and French blood running through our veins, and we take special interest in the Italian and German parts of our heritage. My husband and I both studied Latin, and German in high school and college, and I even had a bit of French. I never had the opportunity to learn Italian in school, but have noticed my son taking a liking to learning the bit of Italian I know from my family. I decided that this would be a wonderful time to introduce him to the Italian language, because he's sharp as a tack and his memory is astounding!

With so many programs and tools to introduce little ones to new languages, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. A friend of mine told me about Little Pim and their wonderful teaching DVD sets, available in multiple languages. From birth to age five, children are hard-wired for picking up languages and good accents. After that, the window begins to close, and it's much harder for them to acquire new languages. Little Pim offers parents the tools to introduce their children to new languages through award-winning DVD sets, which focus on everyday life, in various languages.

I was over the moon excited to connect with the team at Little Pim for the opportunity to introduce my son to the Italian language. He already hears a good amount of German from my husband's mother, who speaks near fluent German. I only know bits and pieces of the Italian language, so I knew this would be a wonderful way for Balian and I to learn a little Italian together.

We received the popular Italian 3 DVD Gift Set, which included three wonderful full-length DVDs, a clear plastic Little Pim zip tote, and an adorable Little Pim plush pal. The three DVDs included feature 'eating and drinking, 'waking up smiling,' and 'playtime.' The three DVDs combined teach little ones over 180 Italian words and also teach them simple phrases. I couldn't wait to show Balian this very special treat!

I explained to Balian that we would be watching a new DVD, and that we would be hearing some words that might sound a little bit different. I told him that we'd be learning a lot of the words that he hears every now and then from his G. G. (Great Grandmother), who uses Italian words in her everyday speaking. Balian was more than eager to see Little Pim and learn a little Italian.

'He is drinking milk.'

I couldn't believe that as soon as I turned the DVD on and the program started, Balian was completely captivated. He found Little Pim, the adorable world-traveling panda bear fun, silly and cute! Before I knew it, Balian was repeating words like 'latte,' 'cucina' and 'torte'. We had a blast learning a few key words the very first day we gave Little Pim a try.

The next day, Balian asked me to put Little Pim on before lunchtime. We watched it together as lunch was warming in the oven. I put the English subtitles on (so it would help me), and I repeated the Italian words and phrases, followed by their meaning in English, so Balian could make the connection. Before we turned it off, Balian was telling me that 'burro' means 'butter; and 'panne' means 'bread.' Balian asked to watch the same DVD again before his afternoon nap, and I just couldn't say no!

As a parent, I think Little Pim is truly wonderful! I am eager to see how many Italian words and phrases Balian will remember and use in his day to day activities and situations. Since I don't speak a second language, this is a wonderful teaching tool. Not only is my son learning another language, but so am I! My husband has even asked to watch Little Pim, so he'll begin to learn some of the words we've been using at home!

Why Teach a Second Language?

It's no longer a luxury to be able to teach your child another language. Many families speak more than one language at home, and by introducing different languages, it gives children a leading edge in life. We live in such a melting pot of cultures and languages, and I definitely want my child to have an advantage, if he ever decides he wants to study abroad. We have passports, and plan to put them to good use, wanting to take a family vacation to Italy one day. My husband and I have even toyed with the idea of one day moving overseas, so he can play with a European symphony orchestra. Sometimes dreams become reality! Whether we just speak a little Italian and German here and there at home, or we get to use it in everyday life, later on, my son will be better off knowing a second and maybe even third language. No one in our home knows Spanish, but I will encourage my son to learn what he can of it, as it would probably be beneficial to him later in life, perhaps when he is out of school and applying for jobs.

  6. I want to introduce a different language to my kids at a young age since it is easier to learn the younger you are.
