Homemade Playdough Recipe

Sometimes, we have to spend a few summer days indoors, due to rain or crazy hot temperatures. We've had a rainy week here in NC, and by Friday morning, we'd run out of ideas to keep Balian entertained. I thought about making playdough from scratch, but didn't want to do it, unless I could find a super easy recipe. Lucky for me, I did find an easy one!

 Here's what you'll need:

  • Bowl
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 1 cup salt
  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
  • Tempera paint or food coloring
  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

Directions:

1. Mix the salt, water and oil, and add enough food coloring to make a nice color.

 Salt, water and oil...

Add drops of food coloring- we chose green...

 2. Gradually add the flour and cornstarch.

I added 1/2 Cup of flour at a time, and 1/2 tsp of cornstarch, stirred, then repeated...

Eventually, the playdough took on the consistency of bread dough, and I kneaded it with my hands.
Don't worry- the food coloring stayed on the dough!

 3. Knead by hand, if needed, cover and store when not in use.

Finally, we ended up with a huge brick of homemade playdough!

I now know that I should have cut this recipe in half, and made two different colored batched of playdough. This made A LOT of one color, which is great, if you have lots of kiddos, but since I just have one, two colors would have been nice from one batch.

For storage, I simply covered with a little plastic wrap, and tossed it into a plastic container with a lid. If it gets a little dried out, I can easily sprinkle some water onto it, to moisten it back up.

 Balian's first experience with playdough...

Super fun to squish and smash!

Balian was entertained for at least half an hour, and had fun making green snakes with mommy!

If you're looking for fun activities for rainy days, give this one a try.
Let the older kids help make this- making it is half the fun!
Hey, it worked for us!

Have a great weekend!
