There is something about early March that makes me want to get my hands in the dirt — even if the air is still crisp and the forecast is playing games with us. If you’re a hobby gardener like me — not running a farm, not trying to feed the neighborhood — just tending your little slice of green joy — this is when the season quietly begins again. Here’s what I’m doing in the garden right now.
1. Clean Up — Gently
Early March is about refreshing, not stripping everything bare. Cut back ornamental grasses and last year’s perennial stems, remove obvious dead growth, and lightly rake leaves (but leave some tucked areas for pollinators still overwintering). If you planted bulbs in the fall, look closely before stepping into beds — those tiny green tips are already pushing through.
2. Prune What Needs It (And Leave What Doesn’t)
Now is the time to prune roses, shape fruit trees, cut back shrubs that bloom on new wood, and tidy certain hydrangeas (make sure you know your variety!). If it blooms early in spring, chances are it set its buds last year — so don’t rush in with the pruners. And please — sharpen and clean your tools. It makes everything easier and healthier for your plants.
3. Plant the Brave Little Crops
If your soil is workable (not soggy, not frozen), you can start sowing lettuce, spinach, peas, radishes, and carrots. These cool-season crops actually prefer chilly weather. You can also start tomatoes and peppers indoors if you’re feeling organized. I say that every year like I won’t wait too long and then buy starts anyway. 😉
4. Feed the Soil First
Before planting much else, nourish your beds. Add compost, top dress with organic fertilizer, fluff compacted soil, and refresh mulch lightly. Healthy soil is everything. This step isn’t glamorous — but it’s what makes the rest of the season thrive.
5. Dream + Plan
March is for mapping things out. Sketch garden layouts, rotate crops if you grow vegetables, try one new flower or vegetable this year, and order seeds before the good varieties sell out. There’s something therapeutic about sitting at the kitchen table with seed packets scattered everywhere.
A Little Reality Check
March loves to fake us out. One warm week doesn’t mean winter is gone. Be patient. Watch the forecast. Keep frost cloth handy. But also — let yourself feel hopeful. Spring is close.
