One of my very favorite things about fall is soup season. There’s just something so comforting about a big pot bubbling on the stove, the smell filling the house, and gathering around the table with family and friends for a warm, hearty meal. And what’s even better? Hosting a Fall Soup Swap!
A soup swap is basically like a cookie swap—but instead of heading home with a sugar rush, you leave with several different homemade soups to stock your freezer or enjoy throughout the week. It’s perfect for busy moms, cozy fall evenings, and anyone who loves a hot bowl of comfort food.
How to Host a Soup Swap
-
Invite Your Friends
Keep it simple—invite a small group of friends, maybe 4–6 families. Ask each person to bring one large batch of soup (enough to portion out and share). -
Get Take-Out Containers
You’ll need containers for portioning. I love grabbing quart-sized deli containers from Amazon, or you can find packs at big box stores or restaurant supply shops. Mason jars also work if you’re going for a cute farmhouse look. -
Decorate with Fall Vibes
A soup swap doesn’t need to be fancy, but a little seasonal décor goes a long way! Think pumpkins, plaid table runners, cozy candles, and maybe a leaf garland draped across the table. A simmering pot of cider on the stove makes the whole house smell amazing. -
Make it a Gathering
Instead of just swapping containers and heading out, invite everyone to sit down together and share a bowl of soup. You can provide bread, salad, or a simple dessert, and just enjoy time with friends before the swapping begins. -
Swap & Enjoy
Everyone goes home with a mix of soups—maybe chili, potato soup, chicken noodle, or butternut squash. It’s like meal prepping, but way more fun.
Cozy Recipe: Lasagna Soup
If you’re not sure what soup to bring, here’s my favorite Lasagna Soup recipe—it’s hearty, cheesy, and tastes like comfort in a bowl.
Ingredients:
-
1 lb Italian sausage
-
1 onion, diced
-
3 garlic cloves, minced
-
1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
-
4 cups chicken broth
-
2 tsp Italian seasoning
-
2 cups uncooked pasta (I like mafalda or rotini for a “lasagna noodle” feel)
-
1 cup ricotta cheese
-
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
-
½ cup grated Parmesan
-
Fresh basil (optional, for garnish)
Instructions:
-
In a large pot, cook sausage, onion, and garlic until browned. Drain excess fat.
-
Stir in crushed tomatoes, broth, and Italian seasoning. Bring to a boil.
-
Add pasta and cook until tender.
-
In a small bowl, mix ricotta, mozzarella, and Parmesan.
-
To serve, ladle soup into bowls and top with a scoop of the cheese mixture. Garnish with basil if desired.
Why You’ll Love a Soup Swap
Hosting a soup swap isn’t just about food—it’s about connection. As moms, our schedules are busy and our days are full, but taking an evening to slow down, laugh with friends, and enjoy a cozy meal together is such a blessing. Plus, having a freezer full of homemade soups (without having to cook them all yourself!) makes those busy weeknights so much easier.
So gather your girlfriends, pull out the pumpkins, and plan your first Fall Soup Swap—I promise it will become a yearly tradition you’ll look forward to every autumn.
