Thanks Floofah, for this pack, in exchange for this review. All thoughts are my own. |
As with most folks, I travel a lot during the summer. In fact, I'm gearing up for 3 weeks in a row of .. adventures.. probably some restful and not so restful! Some adventures are work related, while others are new discoveries on vacations filled with fun and relaxation.
Sand, dirt, sweat, sunscreen, and all things in between need to be daily rinsed off (especially when doing anything outdoors during this heat wave!). On church trips, I often look forward to showers as they are not readily available like they are at home. I've been on adventures where we have to head to the Y, have to take timed showers, or even do without for a couple of days!
One of the things I always pack on every adventure is a shower loofah.
There seems to be two types of people on the showering issue: one prefers utilizing wash cloths, while others prefer a shower loofah/ sponge.
For me, I've preferred the loofah for many years. Years of sleeping in churches, at camps, and in cabins often meant that showers were either bathhouse style or very small, leaving little room to dry out a wash cloth. I've always hated the feeling of the wet, cold cloth as well. Loofahs have been easier to hang up and dry out. With summer humidity, wash cloths often don't dry out overnight and feel gross the next day, to me.
People complain about loofahs too. Harboring bacteria, doesn't get you "clean", is made of plastic (which is bad for the environment), needs frequent replacement, etc. Well, doesn't a wash cloth do all those things too? And for those of you that utilize one wash cloth per shower, more power to you, but I know that's not possible when heading out on a 6-day mission trip!
So, enter in the Floofah. This shower sponge is designed from eco-friendly natural products and not microplastics. Unlike plastic shower and kitchen sponges that end up in landfills, the Floofah will be a plant based sponge that is 100% biodegradable.
It's made from a plant called "luffa gourd", an offshoot of a melon, that grows in warmer climates. It's used a lot in Asian cooking.
The Floofah can be used as a bath or kitchen sponge, depending on your desire and needs. With it's lifespan of about 6–8 weeks, the Floofah won't take up any more landfill space as it's compostable, by just burying it in your yard!
Each sponge needs to be soaked before use. Felt right out of its minimal packing, it feels rough and coarse, but as it soaks in water and with more use, it loosens up like other sponges do. It also "floofs" up from it's originally flat self into a spongey like material.
The floofah absorbs soaps well, creating a rather rich lather, but it's not like the shower loofah that can be manipulated to clean those hard to reach crevices all our bodies have.
Yet, after a week of use, I am pleasantly surprised how it feels! It's almost like exfoliation while I'm showering, as I can feel the dead skin being "floofed" away while my body wash does its magic. I especially enjoy this in the summer because all the things make me itch, so this is sweet relief from bug bites, grass, pollen, dirt, and all the other "gunk" that builds up on our bodies. It also makes it a little bit easier to shave, too!
Each floofah comes with a small tag that can be used for hanging, but I'd really prefer that to be slightly larger.
If you want to really test out your summer fun, grab a Floofah gift pack for you and your loved ones, especially if you have travel planned! These are perfect for summer and will be safer for you and the environment than the plastic ones hiding in the back of your vanity cabinet.
The gift pack came with 3 shower sponges (one was a heart) and 5 kitchen sponges.
I've found these sponges to be perfectly safe for kitchen appliances, including non-stick appliances and gadgets. You will still need your bottle brush, as they are sponges and won't get inside that well-used water bottle.
Floofah's can also be sanitized in the dishwasher, microwave, or in boiling water between use. It's also recommended to let it dry between use to prevent bacteria growth, too.
I find Floofah's to be very affordable compared with their counterparts. The cost of shower sponges ranges from $3-$7, depending on style and size, while the cost of wash cloths ranges from $4-$20, based on the type, size, and number in the pack.
The Floofah is a unique summer item that needs to be at the top of your packing list! With over 400 million sponges tossed a year, take the time and challenge to do some good for your world and environment by purchasing this 100% plant based compostable sponge! Your body.. and your future world- will thank you!
