Follow These Tips To Keep Your Hair Looking Great

For some people, their hair is utterly overwhelming. It behaves differently from right after styling to when the humidity sets in. From bad haircuts to over-styling or using the wrong products, there is a lot to learn about hair, specifically yours, to get it looking great and keep it that way. Continue reading for some easy-to-incorporate ideas on how to treat your hair right for the best results every time.

Know Your Hair Type

Everyone has a hair type, and the sooner you learn what yours is, the better your relationship with your hair will become. Hair types matter because they inform you of the best practices for approaching how you should take care of the hair you have.

For example, when caring for 2A hair, it is helpful to understand that this type of hair is wavy, which you probably already know. But, the awareness that your tresses are supposed to be that way naturally will aid you in making decisions on what products to buy and how to maintain them. For people with type 2A hair, they are better off letting it air dry before styling it and brushing it according to a specific methodology. All of this is easier when you know what type of hair you have.

Keep Hydrating

When people speak of hydration in relation to hair, it means more than one thing. And both are very important when it comes to having a healthy head of hair.

First, when you wash your hair, it is essential to use well-crafted conditioners to smooth your hair and keep it healthy and healthy-looking. Conditioners provide nourishment to the individual hair shafts and give them elasticity to prevent breakage and damage.

Part of any good hair conditioning regimen is including a weekly hair mask. These masks are specially crafted to reduce frizzy hair, strengthen it, and improve shine. If you feel that you do not have enough time to commit to this, use these minutes to multi-task. You can put on some calming music and meditate in the quiet of your bathroom. Use this time for hair removal, or sit back on a chair and read an engrossing book.

Second, drink enough water throughout each day. There are conflicting thoughts and reports about how much water one needs daily. You can offset some of these questions by drinking water frequently and carrying a water bottle with you wherever you go. Pay special attention to things you consume, such as soup, water-dense fruits and vegetables, and juices as they all add to your daily hydration needs. By consuming water and the like, you are helping to keep your hair hydrated. In turn, this helps hair maintain elasticity and shine.

Refrain from Daily Hair Washing

Growing up, you may have been taught to wash your hair every day. Over time, it becomes both a habit and part of your ingrained daily ritual. To keep your hair in good shape it is time to make a change to your long-standing hair-washing routine.

Start by washing your hair every other day to get used to something different. Slowly work it up to every three days, and then to a target goal of washing your hair only once per week. This schedule prevents the shampoo from stripping your hair of its natural oils and causing it to dry out. When bathing or showering on non-hair washing days, be sure to protect your hairstyle by wearing a shower cap that fits securely around your hairline as getting water on your hair will defeat your efforts.

Approach Sleep Differently

Unless you are capable of sleeping upright, you will need to figure out a new way to rest your weary head. And you need to do this while protecting your hairstyle. You have some viable options that are almost effortless. Try some or all of these ideas to see which one(s) work best for you.

  • Silk Pillowcase - Swap your cotton or flannel pillowcase for a high-quality silk one. The smooth strands of silk fibers allow your hair to slide across the pillowcase easily as opposed to another material where your hair catches and may break or crease. As a bonus, silk pillowcases are good for your skin, too.

  • Hair Ties - If your hair fits into a ponytail holder, try tying it up on top of your head in a loose ponytail style. Use a coiled ponytail holder or a smooth fabric scrunchie to prevent creases. This is especially helpful if you tend to move around a lot in your sleep.

  • Dry Shampoo - Good quality dry shampoo can save your hairstyle, specifically if you have an oily scalp. Find a product that has no white residue so your hair color looks as you intend. Apply it to your scalp per the manufacturer’s directions before going to bed to help aid in oil absorption while you sleep.

Watch What You Eat

You are what you eat, as the adage goes. Your hair, however, really is a reflection of what you eat. When you incorporate healthy food into your diet, you make an impact on your whole body, and that includes your hair.

Conversely, eating poorly will cause your hair to become lackluster and lose strength. When the necessary nutrients are lacking in your diet, it shows throughout your entire body. For the best hair, choose protein-rich foods and those that have antioxidants. Basically, by eating foods that are on the USDA’s recommended diet, you are making a positive impact on your hair.
