North America is famous all over the world for its incredible fall season. Every year, the leaves change into a range of colors, providing the perfect opportunity for keen photographers to capture incredible shots.
But where should you go to experience this if you’re headed to New York State? Well, you could take a trip to Central Park in New York City, but you’re not going to get the full impact of nature if you do that. Instead, you’ll want to head out into the hinterland. But where, exactly? Let’s take a look.
The Adirondacks
The Adirondacks are a vast mountain range that covers about a fifth of New York State. And they have a significant quantity of deciduous tree cover, meaning they offer spectacular autumn vistas when September, October, and November come around. The variety of hardwood trees that turn into a rainbow of reds, oranges, yellows, and purples make it a sight to be seen.
Some of the best spots for tree-spotting include:-
Mirror Lake
The High Peaks region
Whiteface Mountain
Lake Placid
The Catskills
Another option is to take a trip to the Catskills, another mountain range in New York State. The Catskills are home to more than 100 peaks over 3,000 feet high, as well as rivers, lakes, waterfalls, and forests. As such, the landscape is pretty spectacular. You’ll see the fall colors arriving in the Catskills around the middle of October, but the timing varies depending on the trees’ elevation. The higher you go, the earlier fall comes.
Some of the best places to see the fall foliage in the Catskills are Kaaterskill Falls, Hunter Mountain, North-South Lake, and the Ashokan Reservoir. But don’t be afraid to go off the beaten track.
If you don’t feel confident traveling to this area by yourself, there are many group trips and tours of the Catskills. These provide you with a guide who knows and understands the local area. They can also take you to the best photography opportunities to capture the essence of the area.
The Hudson Valley
The Hudson Valley is another excellent region for viewing stunning fall foliage in New York State. The region stretches along the Hudson River from north of New York City to Albany and is known for its natural beauty, and cultural history.
The fall foliage in the Hudson Valley is breathtaking and something you frequently see pictured in magazines. The best time to see the leaves on the trees change in this region is from mid-October to early November. For three or four weeks, you’ll see oranges, yellows, greens, purples, reds, and browns all next to each other. Be sure to check out the Bear Mountain State Park, Storm King Art Center, Mohonk Mountain House, and Kykuit.
Finger Lakes
Lastly, you might want to take a trip to the Finger Lakes. These are 11 narrow lakes that take the form of a distinctive finger pattern. They are a popular destination for wine lovers and home to over 100 wineries and vineyards.
