Nobody can force a citizen to vote. But many citizens do vote because voting lets them share with the government what they want it to do. It is our responsibility and chance to choose leaders and representatives who will do things that are important to us. It gives you a say on important issues – from roads and recycling to education and climate change, to housing and employment.
The 2022 elections, held nationally TODAY, go beyond who will represent us in Congress. Voters will also elect representatives at the state, county, and city levels. When there is low voter turnout, local issues will be determined by a limited group of voters, making one vote more statistically meaningful than if everyone voted. While certain ideas may be popular and seem like a sure thing, they can fail if people don't vote.
Why Vote?
Vote because people fought for your right to vote. There was a time in our country when women, minorities, and adults under the age of 21 could not cast a vote. Many people worked hard and sacrificed so you have that right.
Vote for those who died for your freedom. Soldiers and civil rights workers have given their lives for your right to vote.
Vote for your children, grandchildren, and the generations that will follow. Decisions we make today impact our families and all the generations that follow. Make choices that will improve their lives by voting.
Every person in our community pays taxes. Do you know how that money is spent? Voting is your chance to choose how your tax dollars are spent, such as additional funding for health care and social services.
