6 things to consider when decorating your home office
After the events of 2020, many of us aren't returning to the office and are having to face the reality of working from home every day.
This can be difficult for many and one of the best things you can do for yourself is to set up a dedicated home office. Not only will this create a space where you can focus and work, but you can control how it is decorated.
That means if you want to cover the room in Star Wars posters then no one is going to stop you. It also means that you can stock your offices with items that suit you and your working style.
No more overheating shared workspaces. No more chairs that destroy your back. No more noisy coworkers eating their tuna sandwiches next to you. Your home office can be your space.
Get the perfect office chair
Your back will be thanking you after this one.
Many of us struggle with back pain because we spend all day sitting down. While you can't do much about how much sitting you have to do. You can do something about what you are sitting on.
When picking out an office chair you should be looking for something that offers lower back support, upper back support, and arm support.
If you want to take things a bit further, why not consider getting yourself a standing desk.
Get a reliable timepiece
One of the hardest parts about working from home is having to set your own schedule. You can take control of this problem, however, by installing a few things in your home office.
Firstly, you are going to want to put up a day planner. You can get a premade one or even draw one on a whiteboard.
Secondly, you will want to get a reliable wall clock - choose a Rolex wall clock - and hang it in a position that is easy to see. You can use this to keep you on track throughout the day.
Finally, you should consider getting a timer to let you know when you should be going on a break.
Get the temperature right
One of our worst memories of working in an office space was the absolutely sweltering temperatures in the summer. Or was it the freezing temperatures in the winter? Both were awful.
With your home office, you should look at installing a heating and cooling system that allows you to be at your perfect temperature all day. We work better when we are comfortable, see it as an investment in your productivity.
No one wants to be wearing gloves at their desk in 2022, we deserve better than that.
Make a relaxation space
Sometimes we need to take a break during the workday, without leaving our office space. Leaving the space can make it too tempting not to return or it can snap us out of work mode and make it harder to get back into it.
We recommend creating an area in your office with a big and comfortable chair, a soft blanket, and low lighting that you can retreat to when you want to recharge your batteries for a little bit.
You could install a side table with books or a portable gaming device if that's how you like to relax.
Get a 'busy' sign
Setting one of these up in our home office made a huge difference to how much work we got done.
You should set up some system that allows the people you live with that you shouldn't be disturbed at that point in time.
Some people like to use a simple sign or whiteboard. We know other people who have swapped the light outside their office space for an LED one so that they can change the color of it when they are busy.
However, if you choose to do it, make sure you don't skip over this tip - once you are distracted it can take up to 20 minutes to get fully focused again.
Get at least one real plant
Finally, we think that every office needs a plant. Not only do they purify the air, but studies have shown that houseplants are the next best thing to spending time in nature when it comes to relaxing.
Whether it's the daily watering ritual or talking to our plants, scientists believe that a plant in the office drastically improves our quality of life. Plus they look awesome.
