4 Tips for Healthy, Happy Aging

Getting older can bring about certain challenges and many people struggle with the physical and emotional effects of aging. The good news is, there are lots of ways to stay in good health and boost your happiness in later life. With that in mind, here are four tips for healthy, happy aging:

1. Watch what you eat

Your diet will play a crucial role in both your physical and mental health. Many people find it more difficult to maintain their ideal weight when they get older and you may notice the scales going up. Gaining weight can affect your body image and self-confidence. It can also put you at a higher risk of developing medical conditions like diabetes and heart disease. This is why it is important to follow a healthy diet and watch what you eat. According to a nutrition guide by shieldhealthcare.com, “senior men require around 2,000 calories a day and most senior females need around 1,600 calories if they are leading a sedentary lifestyle.” The number of calories you consume will need to be adjusted to reflect your lifestyle. For instance, you should eat a higher number of calories if you are very active. Eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruit and vegetables and try to avoid processed or sugary foods.

2. Get plenty of rest

Getting plenty of rest is important as it gives your mind and body time to heal and recharge. Sleep deprivation is connected to several serious health issues including depression and an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. Older adults should aim to get between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. You can wear a sleep monitoring device to track your sleep quality each night. If you struggle to get to sleep, then try making changes to your sleeping environment or bedtime routines. For instance, add blackout curtains to block light and invest in a high-quality, supportive mattress.

3. Admit when you need help

Needing some extra support as you get older is nothing to be ashamed of. Admitting that you need help can be difficult, but you must reach out for assistance if you are struggling. Moving to a senior living community can be a great way to get the support you need as you get older. You will have on-site carers to assist whenever you need it, and you will be surrounded by like-minded people with similar interests. According to Brightview Senior Living, some senior living communities you're considering may have a waitlist, so it’s important to start researching your options as soon as you think you might be ready.

4. Reduce feelings of stress

Stress is a normal part of life, but too much stress can cause medical complications like high blood pressure and heart disease. Seniors are more susceptible to these health issues, so you must take steps to reduce feelings of stress. Some effective techniques to unwind include exercise, socializing with friends, spending time in nature, and reading.
