With summertime officially here, it's time to plan your summer vacation and day trips! I always look forward to summertime, because it gives my family a chance to do the things we've had on our family bucket list, but have been putting off through the busy academic year. We were recently invited on a trip to Ohio, and as it happens, we have family in Ohio, as well, so a round about visit makes a lot of sense for our family. The kids and I have never been to Ohio, so we're really looking forward to exploring all that there is to see and do in the area. We had sort of put a hold on traveling too far from home in recent years, but just purchased a new vehicle, which makes summertime adventures in travel much more doable.

If you're looking for fun things to do in Ohio this summer, here are some of the top places to check out:

Cedar Point Amusement Park

My husband is a thrill-seeker, and loves amusement parks. There pretty much isn't a ride he won't go on, and out of all of the amusement parks we've been to, Cedar Point remains his favorite. He never stops talking about how awesome the rides are, how great it is for families, and how amazingly fun the park is. There are over 70 rides at Cedar Point, which is located in Sandusky, OH. There's also a water park, so if lounging by the pool is more your speed, you won't feel left out.

A Christmas Story House & Museum

This might not be your typical family must-see, but if you have ever seen the phenomenon that is A Christmas Story, you might want to plan to check out the house from the movie! My sister is A Christmas Story fanatic, and this type of day trip would knock her socks off! It's one of those fun and sort of silly things that'll make you relive your childhood and give you all the holiday feels, even in the middle of the summer. Be on the lookout for the iconic lamp when you enter the house/museum! The house is located in Cleveland and is open to the public for tours year-round.

Akron-Canton Jellystone Park

If you're looking for a fun overnight adventure with the family, Camp Jellystone is worlds of fun! Head on over to the park for a camping trip. The park includes a pool and water zone, mini golf, ice cream shop, general store, and so much more. You'll be able to camp with items you bring along from home, and anything else you may need is there on site.

Burr Oak State Park

Located in southern Ohio is the gorgeous Burr Oak State Park. The park is home to over 2500 acres of beautiful scenic woods in a rustic setting, allowing you to truly experience the beauty of Ohio. The park is home to a campground, as well as a meeting and convention center, so it's the perfect place in a natural setting to plan a family reunion, a work trip, or just to relax with your family. You can enjoy hiking, biking, boating, fishing, backpacking, and so much more. Cabins are also available at the park for an additional fee.

Columbus Zoo and Aquarium

Columbus is a central hub of Ohio, home to thousands, and an attraction to visitors and those passing through. Even folks who live in the Columbus suburbs enjoy their routine trips into this bustling city. Columbus certainly has a lot to offer from dining to nightlife, shopping, and attractions. One of the most visited attractions in Columbus, however, is the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, which is home to more than 10,000 animals and 600 species. The Zoo complex is a recreational and education destination that includes the 22-acre Zoombezi Bay water park and 18-hole Safari Golf Course. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium also manages The Wilds, a 10,000-acre conservation center and safari park located in southeastern Ohio.

Day trips are a ton of fun, and can be a  great way for Ohio residents to explore their beautiful state. It's also a great way for those hosting family from out of state to show their guests the best that Ohio has to offer. Make sure your vehicle is up to snuff before embarking on a day trip. Simple things like checking tire pressure, making sure all fluids have been replaced, and everything is in good working order can really save you time and trouble! If you have plans to make even a short trip, do a little prep before you go (with your car) and you'll start your day trip off on the right foot!
