Hey Mama, Take a Little Time (for Yourself)

Yesterday morning, I woke up, still tired from an unwavering lack of sleep. My sweet toddler daughter has been cutting new teeth and combined with potty training, it's been making for late nights and interrupted sleep for all. As I began my morning routine, I looked in the mirror and hardly recognized the person staring back. I looked tired, silvery gray strands of hair, sparkling like tinsel showed themselves as I turned my head from side to side, and I couldn't help but sigh. 'Where did I go?' I wondered.

I knew that I was still myself, but was a different version of the 'me' I remembered. A little older, maybe even a little wiser, more wrinkles, and dark under eye circles where an even skin tone once resided. I frowned at my hair- a long, curly mess which hadn't been trimmed since before Christmas.

Without another negative thought, I reached for my hair drier, dried my locks, and straightened them with my flat iron. I hadn't realized just how long I'd let my hair grow... too long... too, too long. I had a full day scheduled- planned from sun up to sun down and beyond, but I needed a refresh.

I stepped out of the bathroom and my husband seemed startled by my long straightened hair. I don't normally dry it or straighten it anymore, because a scrunch and go look is so much more convenient.
'I'm getting my hair cut today,' I announced. 'Okay, cool. It's been a while,' my hubby replied.

I picked up the phone and called my mother- another lady who often fills her days doing things for others and takes little time for herself. 'Mom, I'm getting my hair cut. Do you want to come with me and get yours cut?'

The rest is history. We bit the bullet, squeezed haircuts into our busy schedule, and felt fabulous afterward. It's amazing how something as simple as a fresh look for spring can give you a more positive outlook on life.

So, I challenge you to make a little time to do something for yourself. It isn't selfish, and it isn't something you should feel guilty about doing. Self-care is so important, mama, and you're doing a big job taking care of your family...just don't forget that YOU are part of the family, too.

When was the last time you did something for yourself? Let's chat self-love and care in the comments or on MBP social media @mommysblockparty or @mommysblckparty.

Lots of love & hugs to you!
