Take a look at the walls around you. What do you see? In my home, a craftsman style bungalow with loads of charm, I often see things I'd like to change from a design and decor standpoint. Don't get me wrong, I love the style of our home, but we're working toward making our decor more modern, and making our living spaces more functional. Aside from tossing out all of our outdated and eclectic furnishings, we're looking at re-painting walls, getting rid of boxy pieces of furniture, and going with colors that are more modern and soothing.
Today's design scapes take a much more minimalist approach. It seems that the days of plastering walls with brightly colored paint and personal photos are few and far between. Singles, couples, and families are looking for serene spaces in which to live, work, and play.
Part of our thinking on re-decorating is to move away from muted, earthy tones, and steer more toward clean colors that help us balance our moods. De-cluttering is a major step in working toward living a well-balanced life, and that can be hard when you've held onto items for many years, or have allowed toys and books to grow by the pile.
Once you've de-cluttered your space, be it home or workspace, you'll see that you have a fresh canvas to work with. It's easy to choose design elements when you have a clean backdrop. You can even paint brick, if it shows on the interior, to completely lighten up the look of a room. Don't worry- we'll talk about adding color back in, too. Light grey, yellow or various shades of white on the walls will make your space look so much cleaner, and larger. Once you have your furnishings in place, you can start to add other elements back in.
When you're ready to design a new look for your space, start by adding a splash of color in a canvas print. You don't even have to hang the canvas on the wall if you don't want to. If you don't have a fireplace, not to worry. You can usually find reclaimed mantles at thrift or vintage stores. Check local antique stores, flea markets, yard sales or estate sales, and see what kinds of treasures you can find. Hang a floral canvas print on the wall above a mantle, or rest the canvas print against the wall, sitting on the mantle.
Why floral canvas prints? Adding a floral print to design can really brighten the space up. There are so many colors you can choose from, and many prints incorporate many coordinating colors. This makes it easy to pick and choose mix and match design elements. If you start with a floral canvas print as a focal point, you can then add in other pieces, such as area rugs, throw pillow, lamps and other small decorative items, which play off of or tie in with the colors in the canvas print. Another reason to go with florals is that they'll add life to your home in the dead of winter- a time of year where we might tend to feel depressed or discouraged. Being able to look at flowers, whether real or on canvas adds a hopeful aspect to an otherwise dull season.
You don't have to stick with a shared living space to add a beautiful canvas print to your life. Canvas prints add a decorative touch of whimsy to any space. Hang them from bookshelves to add another depth or dimension to vertical storage. Add them to powder rooms to make them more inviting. Add canvas prints to children's rooms to brighten the space as they learn, play, and grow. Canvas prints are even a perfect choice for an office or small business space. They're easy to hang, easy to remove, and can be switched out with ease anytime you want to change the look of a room.
