Your Summertime Guide for Handling Poison Ivy

Summertime when I was young meant always getting poison ivy or poison oak.  I couldn’t get through a summer without catching it.  My sisters and I would get it so bad our eyes would swell shut and it was a trip to the pediatrician. E on the other hand...

Since finding a summer job has been unsuccessful, he has been outside doing yard work and what does he get? Poison ivy!
Imagine literally running a safe distance from your child because of a fear of getting it.  He has a minor case of it and thankfully I haven’t caught it yet.

So I took to Google to find something that would help him and thankfully most over the counter treatments are already in my house.

Helpful Items in Clearing Poison Ivy

1. Oatmeal- This helps with relieving the itchiness as well as helps to dry out the rash. Oatmeal baths can be messy, but the relief they give is worth the mess.

2. Tea Bags- The oil from tea leaves creates a natural anti-inflammatory. This brings down swelling and helps with the itchiness.

3. Witch Hazel- This works for relieving the itchiness. It also cleans the area exposed and helps to prevent spreading.

4. Baking Soda- By creating a paste with water and baking soda the oils that cause spreading and itchiness will be in a sense quarantined.

The best way to clear up poison ivy? Don't go near the plant.  Looks like E needs a lesson in nature.

  1. Poison Ivy is the worst! Thankfully, it has been quite a few years since I have had it.
