The Beguiled #Movie Review

Thank you to Universal Pictures for providing product for me to review. All thoughts are my own.

In the late 1990's I started my first job at Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site in Midland, North Carolina. I was barely fifteen years old and educating visitors about the first discovery of gold in the United States. Other than my current career as a teacher, it has been my absolute favorite job. I guided visitors through the restored underground gold mine, demonstrated the operation of a stamp mill and taught visitors how to pan for gold. My love for history started at that historical site and my passion for explaining it to others continues to grow.

It is not surprising that motion pictures of historical events catch my attention. I love to see historical events in action and often that is a great way to build interest for those that are not as interested in history. In particular, I like movies that dive into the lives of people during a particular event. It gives perspective and takes away from the idea of presentism when viewing a historical event. The Beguiled does a great job showing the various perspectives of life during the Civil War.

The Beguiled is directed by Sophia Coppola and is based on the novel by Thomas Cullinan. The setting of The Beguiled takes place is in the 1860s in Confederate Virginia during the Civil War.  Colin Farrell plays that character of a Union soldier, Corporal McBurney, who is wounded and is taken in by an all-girls boarding school owned by Miss Martha, played by Nicole Kidman

The women and girls at the school are intrigued by their visitor and instead of turning him over as a prisoner of war decide to help him recuperate before his departure back to the war.  Biding for his affection his caretakers become jealous towards one another until a twisted turn of events convinces Corporal McBurney that he is no longer welcome and perhaps the ladies are out to harm him.

The Beguiled is a fantastic movie to demonstrate just how complicated life can be while in the midst of a civil war. There are two sides to every story and The Beguiled promises to not disappoint.
