Family Time with My Gnome on the Roam + #Giveaway

Thank you to My Gnome on the Roam for providing me with this product for review. All opinions are 100% my own.

One could say that my family has a long history with gnomes so when this product became available I was so excited to try it! In the early 1980s, my grandmother created what we called a “fairyland” that started with a house for a wild rabbit and progressed into a backyard full of whimsical gnomes and various other items. I grew up next door so to say that my childhood was imaginative is an understatement. I am so excited that my children can have similar experiences with My Gnome on the Roam!

My Gnome on the Roam was created by Anne Armstrong, a mom and middle school teacher from Nashville, Tennessee. Her goal is to create quality family time in as little as 30 minutes a week with her motto "Make your life a book worth reading".  From personal experience, once you get your own Gnome on the Roam you'll find a lot more than 30 minutes of family time a week!

I was just as excited to open the suitcase that our gnome was packaged in as my three-year-old was. The first item you see is the unadorned white gnome eager to be transformed into a new member of your family. Underneath the packaging are more treasures: an adventure guide, My Gnome on the Roam storybook, and My Gnome on the Roam journal. The adventure guide gives you a lot of direction for ideas and also references the My Gnome on the Roam app for your smart device to give you awesome daily ideas for family time as well as a platform to journal electronically.

Our first step was to color our gnome, whom we affectionally call “Roman”. We used what items we had on hand in our craft cabinet to give our gnome a personality of his own. Items we used included: washable markers, acrylic paint, permanent markers and paint pens. All were easy to use but our favorites that stood out were the permanent marker and paint pens. Meanwhile, we used the opportunity to read the story about My Gnome on the Roam, download the app and create our list of adventures.

Our three year old was excited to show our gnome all the fun things to do in our home and town. Like the creator of My Gnome on the Roam, Anne Armstrong, I too am an educator and I am a firm believer that teaching others helps you learn. This could not be truer for our little boy, 'C'. He used every opportunity to teach our gnome all the things he knows--how trains work, how plants grow, how planes fly and what to do if someone in your class is mean.

The addition of the gnome to our family is perfect timing since ‘C’ is about to become a big brother soon! Our once shy three year old is making sense of his world by explaining things to the family gnome. The gnome fits perfectly in his chubby hand and often is used as a way to express his own feelings—“my gnome is tired”. This will be a great help for him to express how he is feeling and start conversations when his baby sister arrives!
