Aging is inevitable. Let me get that out of the way first, fighting old father time is something we can do nothing about, but enjoying life as you get older is down to some simple things. Primarily it’s just down to feeling good, which can be fixed by having a good diet and getting some exercise. As parents, we don’t always find the time to get a quality workout in, let alone 45 minutes in front of an exercise DVD, and our kids won't eat salad because there’s no taste. So what's the solution to keeping you fit, and keeping the family healthy?
It might sound too good to be true, but there are exercises you can do that don’t take long and will give you the required benefits. You may have heard of HIIT (or High-Intensity Interval Training). It is designed to give you the massive workout your body needs in a short space of time. Tabata sprints are an incredibly effective way of running over a period of 20-minutes instead of going for 4-hour runs. But, be warned, the first time you do it you may not want to do it again, and it can be very uncomfortable. So get the most comfortable clothing for you, from workout capris to sports bras that don’t chafe. While this is good cardio, if you need to work your muscles properly, there is a weight version based on the Body By Science protocol. The idea of working your muscles is to inroad them, so they grow back bigger. The Body By Science approach is to do a weight lift very, very, slowly. Around 35 seconds up and hold before 35 seconds down. You will feel like you have fought a lion afterward, and by working on 5 basic core moves, you have worked out your whole body in about 20 minutes!
Now, as you can exercise in a short amount of time, you can also cook in a short amount of time, and also make it healthy for you and your family. Fish lovers look away now, but the Mediterranean diet is so full of healthy fats which are great for your heart health, eye health, and your whole body, that it is a perfect addition to the menu in your home. The fats from the olive oils and fish mean that it is tasty, but also will fill you up. Salads never fill people up, which is why people never stick to the traditional diet where you're depriving yourself. Instead, get a nice flavorless fish (for the fish haters) like cod or haddock and place it on a bed of thinly sliced potatoes, Mediterranean vegetables, and olives and wrap it all up in a tin foil purse. Drizzle with olive oil and put in the oven on a medium heat for around 20 to 30 minutes. You can make a lovely tapenade to spread on your fish to keep it interesting too! Exercise and food don't need to take up all your time. Try these food and fit methods.
