When my husband and I picked out our everyday dishes almost ten years ago, we chose all white ceramic plates and bowls. They seemed the most practical, and have served us well. We see ourselves using them for many years. Every now and then, however, I really want to switch things up with some colored plates and bowls. We have our friends over for dinner a lot (and they happen to have the same dishes that we do), and I'd love to be able to serve dinner or dessert on a festive plate sometimes, and not have to worry about one of the kids breaking our dishes.

Enter The Melamine Kitchen. I haven't really been a fan of the idea of bringing melamine dinnerware into the house. We've been so happy with our everyday dishes, but after wishing for a casual dinnerware set that we could use when dining outside, or with the kiddos, I have been on the hunt for a great set of melamine dishes. I was so excited to receive this set. Red isn't a color I normally would have gone with. Our kitchen colors are black and olive green, with a little yellow thrown in, and we also use those colors in our dining room. Red is a color that is fairly prominent during holidays, though- Christmas, Valentine's Day, Memorial Day, the 4th of July, Labor Day, etc. My mother-in-law has red dinnerware, and I've always secretly loved its boldness. 

I couldn't wait to try out these striking red plates and bowls. Our holiday season was super busy, and we actually didn't entertain family and friends at our house, because we were invited to so many other people's homes for festivities. We've just settled back down from the glorious chaos of Christmas, and I had a rare quiet evening to myself at home. I treated myself (and my growing baby bump) to a pasta dinner at home, and was eager to use my new red melamine dinnerware.

I set aside a bowl and a salad plate, as I prepared my dinner. I love the way the red looks against the pretty black and white table runner my mother-in-law made me for Christmas!

I prepared a quick dinner of a simple salad, and cheese tortellini. The salad plate was the perfect size for a dinner salad, and the bowl was just right for a single serving of tortellini. The bowl is actually pretty deep, awesome for cereal, soup, and brownies with ice cream!

This festive salad looks great on the ruby red melamine salad plate.

A simple serving of pasta is perfectly delicious and utterly delightful when presented in this pretty new dinnerware.

I texted my hubby a photo of my dinner on our new dinnerware, and he thought it looked so great! I have a feeling he was sorry he missed out on the dinner, too!
