No one can argue with the fact that marriage can be tough. My hubby and I have been married for seven years, and the best of friends for sixteen years! We've known each other for so long, and feel like we know everything about one another. Friendship, dating and the thrill and excitement of joining our lives through marriage was amazing and wonderful. A few years later, our beautiful and precious son Balian came into the mix. Those first few months, we partnered together so well, and as we settled into our brand new family life, I noticed that through the stress of parenthood, work, and volunteer responsibilities, our relationship began to suffer.

They say that the seventh year of marriage is the toughest, and I have to almost agree with that. Our seventh year of marriage has been the hardest. We've disagreed with one another on issues from parenting to finances and education, made promises to make more time for one another- to actual feel like we're in a relationship as a husband and wife, rather than being two people who live in the same house and sometimes eat meals together or say 'Hi,' in a rush out the door each morning.

We're not quitters, though- we made a promise to God and one another in front of our families and friends, when we decided to bind our lives together. This fall, we made a promise to spend more time in prayer together, and to make time for each other- to make dates and keep them... to communicate and rekindle the romance we once had.

We were blessed as a couple, to receive a copy of this beautiful book. The book begins with a message from the Idelmans, explaining that the Bible is the Greatest Love Story ever told, and that is so true! It's filled with stories of God's love! This devotional is filled with encouraging and uplifting scripture for couples from Song of Solomon. 

Take this passage, for example:

'Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealously unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame.'

This passage is about being in it for the long haul- deciding from the start that the word 'divorce' isn't even a part of your vocabulary.'Truly married couples don't think- 'Okay, I can live with this person,' rather, 'I can't live without this person.'

The book is filled with blank pages for notes and also includes homework and activities for couples. I love the activity of couples making an acronym with their names. Here's what I came up with for my husband:

Selfless

Attentive

Cultured

Honest

Authentic

This devotional has truly made a difference in our marriage. We're enjoying reading it together, and I am looking forward to sharing this with my best friend, who is getting married in 2015- because it's never too early in a marriage to awaken love. This devotional would make a beautiful gift for couples. I am thinking of suggesting it to the gal who organizes our church Annual Marriage Retreat weekend. I think this would be great for a group of couples to work through as a six-week bible study!
