Tip Tuesday: DIY Pool Noodle Sprinkler

Yay... the kids are out of school- are they bored yet? Around where I live, school has only been out for a couple of weeks, and like most parents, my hubby and I don't have a lot of extra bucks lying aroud to spend on summer classes and camps for our son. So, we're trying to make do and come up with some fun stuff to do around home for little to no cost. Like usualy, it's Pinterest to the rescue for all sorts of ideas for summer projects, and activities. I remembered seeing a pin for a DIY Pool Noodle Sprinkler a while back, and wondered if it really worked, or if it would wind up being none of my famous Pinterest fails? I was determined to make it work, and create an awesome afternoon of fun for my son, in our own backyard.

Want to make one? Here's what you'll need...

1 Pool Noodle (we got ours at the Dollar Store)
1 Old medicine bottle with lid
Kabob Skewer
Hose

Step 1- Insert the end of a hose into one end of the pool noodle. It should fit snugly.

Step 2- Plug the other end of the noodle.

*I used a medicine bottle with the lid on to plug the other hole in the pool noodle. Obviously, you can use whatever else you might want to. Others have suggested foam, using Duct tape, etc. Basically, anything that water won't go right through and out the other end will do.

Step 3- Grab a kabob skewer...

...and poke lots and lots of holes through the noodle. The more holes you have, the more water will squirt through, and the more fun it will be!

Step 4- Drape the hose over a sturdy tree branch, and let the noodle hang down.
Turn the water on, and play!

B had a blast playing in this super cheap, easy and new to us outdoor sprinkler! We ran the water for about fifteen minutes at a time, letting the pool fill up. Once the pool was full, I turned the water off (have to pay for it, ya know?), and let B splash and play in the pool. We removed some of the water with buckets and watered the plants with them, and then I turned it back on, and we repeated the process two or three times.

Splashy fun!

Letting the water fall into the pool below was a great idea on my part- this way, we weren't really wasting water and flooding the yard.

The sprinkler was a lot of fun to lie underneath...

...and fun to be sprinkled by!

I am so glad we tried this idea out for ourselves, and that it actually worked for us! I have seen all sorts of creative pool noodle sprinkler ideas, like creating a car wash for the kids to ride their ride-ons and bikes through, creating a backyard splash pad, and more! I'll let you know if we try out any of those other ideas!

If you're looking for a fun, inexpensive way to keep the kids busy and to stay cool this summer, give this little project a try! It's a winner!
