Tasty Tuesdays: Shrove Tuesday Pancakes #Recipe

Happy Shrove Tuesday! Today is known to many folks as 'Shrove Tuesday,' or Mardi Gras, which is French for 'Fat Tuesday.' Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, the day when the season of Lent (the 40 days and nights leading up to Easter) in the church. Many denominations observe Shrove Tuesday, including mine (Lutheran). Most folks eat lots of fatty foods on Fat Tuesday or Shrove Tuesday, based on the idea that they will give up indulgences during the season of Lent. Many people often wind up giving up foods like sweets or fast food, some people give up meat, soft drinks, etc.

It's a long standing traition that folks gather together for fellowship on Mardi Gras or Shrove Tuesday and enjoy a pancake dinner. My church almost always hosts a pancake supper, but if you're not headed to a pancake dinner somewhere this evening, you can still enjoy a delicious pancake dinner at home with my recipe for Best Ever Pancakes!

You Will Need

1 1/2 Cups All Purpose Flour
3 1/2 Tsp. Baking Powder
1 Tsp. Salt
1 Tbsp Sugar
1 1/4 Cups Milk
1 Egg
3 Tbsp Melted Butter
1 Tsp. Vanilla

Directions

Sift together the dry ingredients. Make a well in the center of the mixing bowl, and then pour in the milk, egg, vanilla and melted butter. Mix until smooth.

Heat canola oil over medium high heat in a skillet. You can use a griddle, if you prefer, but we like to fry the pancakes for a special treat! Pour in the 1/4 cup of batter to make 1 pancake. Flip when the top is bubbling. Fry until golden brown. Serve hot with maple syrup, or whatever else you like.

Of course, you can add your favorite mix-ins to this recipe- bananas, strawberries or blueberries, chocolate chips, etc.

These pancakes turn out crispy on the outside, and nice and fluffy on the inside. They are truly our family's favorite pancakes ever, and they're definitely indulgent!

We hope you'll give our pancake recipe a try tonight with your family!

What are your plans for Mardi Gras?

  1. Well I think Mardi Gras is over, and I do not celebrate it. But I have to tell you that your pancake recipe is so awesome and easy to make. My family would love to have these. Thanks for sharing. And I did not know that it was called Happy Shrove Tuesday. I will remember that for next year.
