Jess' Journey; The Road To A Healthier Me

I Think Im Finally Ready

Hi friends, Jess here and I am looking for some new ideas and some support when it comes to weight loss. As most of you readers know, I am a plus sized gal and I am looking to lose some weight, well more than some, a lot.

If its ok with all of you, Id like to start posting about my journey to a healthier me. Every Monday I will be posting a new leg of Jess' Journey, I will hopefully even start doing a weekly weigh in. Im doing this because Id like your support and your ideas, Id also like to share this to help out others who might be in the same shoes I am. Shedding the pounds is going to be really hard for me, but I know with the right mind set, the right support, and the right goals I can do it.

The first step of my journey was setting an obtainable goal. I didn't want my goal to be something simple like "I will lose 20lbs" or "I will drop 3 dress sizes". I wanted my goal to have more meaning so it makes me want to work harder. That being said, I have set 2 obtainable goals; 1) by next summer I want to be able to get up and go do all of the active things my moms side of the family likes to do. (We have plans to go on a family vacation to the beach next summer with them and they LOVE to go on walks and do things that require being pretty active and for once Id like to enjoy those things with my family without being tired, out of breath, or left behind.) 2) next summer I want to participate in the Color Run with my sister. I know that neither of these will be possible if I stay in the shape Im currently in. My goals are set and I have around 1 year to get them completed.

I know the key to losing weight is working out and eating right, I know that there is no quick fix. However, I can't seem to find a way to workout that isn't boring to me or that doesn't take hours. I need some ideas on how to workout that are quick (30mins or less), free, fun, and something I could possibly sucker my husband into doing with me. I've downloaded Couch to 5k and hope to start that soon, but its only 3 days a week and I know I'll need more. Id love to hear all of your ideas on how to get in shape. Please take the time and share!

When it comes to eating right, I don't mind eating healthy, in fact I usually enjoy it. Unfortunately, I have some dietary restrictions that keep my green leafy veggies to a minimum. I can only eat small amounts of vitamin K and green leafy veggies are full of it. This makes healthy eating harder than it should be because I can't just sit around and eat salads all day long. I have a hard time finding new healthy recipes that are low on green leafies, quick, taste good, and are filling enough to satisfy my husband the 6' 4'' carnivore. I know a lot of our readers are phenomenal chefs so please friends, take the time and share your healthy recipes! I know Im not the only one who will enjoy them!

If you want to contribute workout ideas, healthy recipes, or just words of advice/support please email me at littleboo84@yahoo.com

I really look forward to starting this journey together.

  3. Good luck to you Jess on your Journey. My Hubs is right there with you trying to lose weight. He is doing pretty well at it by sticking to his diet. I can remember when he told me he would NEVER eat like I do... I eat mostly vegetables, some protein and very few carbs. Now... he is eating just like me. I guess you should never say never.

  4. Good luck to you on your journey, Jess! I think you will do great. The best advice I can give is exercise some every day. Also, allow an occasional splurge so you don't feel deprived.

  5. What a year you have ahead of you! I also just started the couch to 5k so I'll be right there with you on that! I'm not a great resource for structured exercise, but anytime you can, I'd suggest just getting out and doing fun things that won't seem like exercise. Playing Frisbee is my favorite way to get my heartrate up without even realizing I'm doing it.

  7. I am also on a journey to lose 100 pounds! I have a knee injury so exercise is minimal right now. I hope you'll read about my journey on my site! I also used to run a bootcamp for plus size women and I have some articles posted there as well that you might like. It's called PlusSizeFitnessOnline.com. Hope we can support and encourage each other!

  8. Jess I too am a plus size blogger. A foodie with health issues. Exercise is difficult for me and it has to be fun. Have you always been larger? If not, what did you enjoy before? This was something a friend asked me. She said, do what you used to enjoy. I enjoy dancing, so dance DVD's work for me and can be done at any size. I'm not a runner or into weights. I'd love to ride my bike again. And wear shorts. Those are two of my goals. We can do this! I need to lose 100 or more. I look forward to reading your progress.
Also, I am revamping my recipes, so except for desserts, my recipes are healthy.

    1. Hi Dawn! Thanks for sharing! Yea, I have always been on the big side but I was a lot smaller in high school because I was on the swim team. I LOVE swimming but sadly, the only place to do that around here is the Y and we can't really afford a membership. I don't mind walking on our treadmill while watching a movie or a tv show because that way I forget what Im doing. I can't wait to check out some of your recipes!

  9. I am so excited to be with you through your journey!! I was almost 300 pounds several years ago and ended up having to have gastric bypass surgery to basically save my life. I ended up losing over 160 pounds and have since gained back about 15% of my weight, which is normal. I know the fact that I can get up and go has made SUCH a difference in my life!!

  11. I love that you have short and long term goals! I use myfitnesspal.com on my phone and it really has helped keeping me within the daily calorie goals. When we go out to eat I make sure I ask for the take home box. I split the meal in half before I even start to eat. If not I will clean my plate!Best of luck on your weight loss journey, you are going to do fine!

  17. Jess, I wish you the best of luck and I would like to read about your journey each week. I am working on weight loss my self. It is not so easy as we get older. I am using a FitBit One to track my activity and food intake. I just put an update on my blog about the FitBit.

  19. Congratulations on taking the most important step--deciding to make the change! As far as activity suggestions, I have two ideas that have always worked for me. First, get a reliable pedometer and set a step goal. Wearing one prompts me to get up from my computer and do some jumping jacks throughout the day to help me get my steps or to go for a walk instead of sitting down to watch TV. Second, plan fun, not exercise. Go for short, romantic walks with your hubby. Play catch with the kids. Have a family dance party. These are things that will help you be more active and are less boring than trying to finish 30 minutes on an elliptical machine.
