From Catwalk to Kitchen: Top Tableware Design Trends for 2013

The catwalks are overflowing with stunning summer collections which are being emulated in high streets across the country. If you want to give your kitchen a breath of fresh air, why not draw inspiration from the runway for a chic, cutting-edge feel?

White out

Minimalism is a trend that comes around time and time again and this summer is no exception, with elegant white creations gracing the catwalks. Whether you opt for a porcelain salad set or a teapot, milk jug and sugar bowl set, buy it in crisp, clean white.

A plain white plate is a favourite among chefs and high-end restaurants and can provide the perfect ‘frame’ for colourful culinary creations, creating glamorous and functional dinner sets. If you’re worried white is too plain, jazz it up by choosing a square-shaped plate or tessellating bowls with attention-grabbing silhouettes.

Floral

With the sun out for long spells, Britain is in full bloom and fashion designers are making the most of this by infusing pretty floral creations into their collections.
Dinner sets with bright floral patterns set against a white background make an elegant style statement and are a great way to add colour and personality to the dinner table. For a subtler hint of flower power, opt for plates with a floral border.

Monochrome

As contrasting colours, black and white makes for an attention-grabbing combination which is taking the runways by storm. Black and white also looks great on the table, whether you opt for trendy polka dot mugs or elegant black and white dinner sets. Alternatively, you could emulate the catwalk in your kitchen by investing in chic monochrome aprons and oven gloves. Add to the style statement by choosing an unusual accessory in striking monochrome such as a tilting turntable.

Stripes

Colourful stripes are bang on trend at the moment and are flattering on all figures – but their capacity to style reaches beyond the catwalks. If you’re dining out, perhaps at the beach or in the local park, invest in a trendy stripy bag.

Go bold with stripes so that yours stands out from the crowd: blues, reds and whites are a great way to create a nautical effect, which is always in style for summer. These colours are also reminiscent of the Union Jack and Great British events such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Games, so why not go all out and buy a family picnic hamper in these patriotic colours?
