Head Back to School this Summer: MONSTERS UNIVERSITY is Now in Theaters! #Review

The wait is over! MONSTERS UNIVERSITY is finally here, playing in theaters everywhere! We were lucky enough to take a sneak peek at the funny bone tickling film late late week, and are excited to share our thoughts about it!

Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University (MU). But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer.  The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right. Screaming with laughter and oozing with heart, Disney•Pixar’s “Monsters University” is directed by Dan Scanlon (“Cars,” “Mater and the Ghostlight,” “Tracy”), produced by Kori Rae (“Up,” “The Incredibles,” “Monsters, Inc.”) and features music from future Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and award-winning composer Randy Newman (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Toy Story 3”).

What We Thought...

Since it's been twelve years since MONSTERS, INC. came to theaters, we were very excited to see this prelude film in the works. When it finally came time for my hubby and I to head to the theater for a first look at MONSTERS UNIVERSITY, I felt like a kid again, remembering going to the movies with my own parents as a little girl, seeing my favorite Disney characters come to life on the big screen.

Monsters University is beautifully animated, vibrant with movement and exquisite color. We saw the film in 3D, which always adds to the overall fun, because everything appears to jump out at you. For the story line, I was pulled in from the very begining, where we see Mike as a little monster, who has dreams of getting into the Scare Program at Monsters U, so he can be a professional Scarer. As Mike heads to college, he faces many unforseen challenges, and makes a few unlikely friends, including Sully, who is desperately trying to live up to his family name. When the unthinkable happens and Sully and Mike both find themselves booted from their beloved Scare Program, they must join forces and work together to face a multitude of obstacles together, in the MU Annual Scare Games.

Throught their tests and trials, Mike and Sully form an unbreakable bond, and learn some pretty tough life lessons, including the consequences of cheating and breaking the rules. In the end, the two remain friends and  plan to do whatever it takes to one day become Scarers, just as they'd always dreamed.

The casting couldn't have been better. All of the voice actors were so incredible, and Billy Crystal and John Goodman make an undeniably wonderful team, who make their characters come to life.

The film is a lot of fun, and it's one of the best Disney movies I've seen in quite a while. There is so much lighthearted silliness, and there are endless jokes and funny bits for the kids, and for the adults, as well. My husband and I certainly had flashbacks to what college life was like for the two of us, and found ourselves laughing out loud, in a theater filled with kids. We can't wait for our son to see Monsters U... we know it will quickly become one of his favorites!
