Usborne Books: When I Love You at Christmas Review & Giveaway

~Part of our 2011 Holiday Gift Guide~

The holiday season is in full swing, whether you are ready or not. I am slowly getting into the mood for all the next two months have to offer. I know we will be so busy between now and then, and I like to start getting prepared as early as possible.
One way we like to prepare, is to get out our holiday book collection. Each year, as one of our family Christmas traditions, we add a new book, or a few, to the collection. This year we have already found our first addition, from the Usborne Books company.
Jennifer Navara
Jennifer Navara, with Usborne Books, kindly met up with me and shared a brand new Christmas book. When I Love You at Christmas is a 26 page book, written by David Bedford and illustrated by Tamsin Ainslie, published by Kane Miller.
When I Love You at Christmas is a story about a little girl and her stuffed animal at Christmastime.

The front cover is very colorful and immediately drew Scarlett (my 2 year old) in. Each page has the little girl doing some sort of Christmas activity-wrapping gifts, making cookies, decorating the tree, acting out the Nativity scenes, writing Christmas cards, sleeping on Christmas Eve, and waking to presents and opening them, while her stuffed toy looks on.

What I didn't at first realize while reading it, was that the speaker in the story is not the little girl, but her stuffed animal. He is happily watching her do all the things to get ready for Christmas and saying how much he loves her, no matter what she is doing.

This is my favorite page in the entire book.
I love the way the little girl's toy seems so content with his life.

The illustrations throughout When I Love You at Christmas are bright and cheery. They represent exactly what is being spoken about in the story, so even Scarlett understood just by the pictures the little girl was getting ready for Christmas with her toy.

The little girl and her favorite toy.
The front and back inside pages are these great green flowery pages.

The words "That's when I love you" are used as the last line of each page, this is Scarlett's favorite part (to which she says "when I lub you"). After reading this book many times over, three times alone last night, she knows most of the words and says them with me.

Beckett (my 4 year old) isn't as much of a fan of When I Love You at Christmas, because there are no boys in the story. He will sit and listen to it but has not asked for it, Scarlett on the other hand, has asked for it nightly since we got it. I think it is the perfect length and story for getting in the Christmas spirit!

Thanks so much to Jennifer Navara for providing my family our first new Christmas book of the season. I know this book is already a favorite in one little girl's eyes and will continue to be read at our house, all season long.
