My Granny Went To Market

I love books and not just because I am a teacher. So when I was asked to do a book review for Bonnie Hessler of Barefoot Books, I was ecstatic! I read My GrannyWent To Market as soon as I opened the box it came in and couldn’t wait to share it with my Kindergarten class.

My Granny Went To Market by Stella Blackstone is a classic counting book with a fresh new feel. Good old Granny buys a flying carpet and travels the world picking up interesting goods from places like Mexico and Thailand. My favorite part had to be when Granny flew to Russia for nesting dolls because it made me think of my sister. The ending is great as well; it leaves the book open for discussion of where the reader would take their magic carpet. This book is great for helping children work on counting to 10, it would be a great social studies link, and it is a good Language link because rhymes.

Illustrations are one of my favorite parts of children’s books and the illustrator of My Granny Went To Market, Christopher Corr, outdid himself. My Granny Went To Market is full of extravagant colorful pictures that really capture each country Granny visits. When Granny visits Africa for six booming drums Corr has painted a beautiful picture of the sunny desert. It’s so vibrant that the wildebeest seems to be running right off the pages.

I read children’s books every day to my students so I know a good book when I read it and My Granny Went To Market is a good book. I asked our 1st and 2nd grade teacher to read it to their students as well (the teachers loved it too). But don’t take our word for it, take a listen to the REAL experts and find out what they thought of this great counting book.
