Trusting God in the Transition

Transitions are hard; no matter the person or type.

  • Relocating
  • Job changes
  • Grade advancements
  • Achievements & Recognitions
  • Empty Nest
Each transition, while there is joy, can also be challenging and unsettling. Wondering what God is doing, how we can survive the moment, and move forward with life.

How can we trust God in the transition moments?

1) God doesn't change; even when life does.

We dislike transitions because they make us feel less secure and more shaky.

Scripture reminds us that wherever God calls us, he won't leave us (Isaiah 41: 9-10)

2) Give up controlling the big picture

We want to protect our kids, we want to make the best choices for them because we know the "what ifs".

Even if that teen's university choice and life plan makes no sense because you know the current state of economics, let them make that decision.

You can't really know what God will do in and through those experiences.

3) Give yourself permission to grieve

Giving ourselves permission to wrestle with our emotions is highly important. Not only are you watching your child grow; you are struggling with your own self and wondering if you have done all you can.

You do not have to pretend your fine, because honestly, most of your friends and family probably are not either.

4) Look for God in the small things

In Lutheran tradition, we welcome the newly baptized into the body Christ; trusting that the Holy Spirit is there to help and guide us. This means that we are never alone; that God is always there.

  • Those car trip moments
  • Dinner & Bath Time
  • Stillness when you are in awe & wonder of your child's accomplishments
  • The text from a friend/ family member checking in
  • A random meme that gives you encouragement

From the water to the post it note, God is with us.

Remember you are not alone

This world tells us that we should "suck it up buttercup"; but the reality is that we have a caring loving community to help us through the difficult moments.

Even if you think your moment isn't as important as someone else's, share it.

Don't go through life alone.

I can only hope that they continue to trust God when they too, hit those difficult transition moments.

These experiences can feel messy; your footing unsure, your sanity questioned. Yet, when you reflect back, you might see how faithful God was when you trust. It's not that everything will work out (but it will, just in God's timing), it's that you trusted God to do God's job.
