Breeze in, Winter out! First Day of Spring Traditions

Can you feel it? The air is just a little bit softer, the birds are starting their morning concerts again, and—hallelujah—the sun is hanging around past 5:00 PM!

As a mom, the first day of spring always feels like a collective exhale. We’re finally shaking off the winter cobwebs and trading heavy coats for light hoodies and snow delays for sunshine.  Marking the "official" start of the season with a few simple traditions is a wonderful way to embrace family time. If you’re looking to add some extra magic to your calendar this March 20th, here are five easy ways to celebrate with your crew!

1. The Ultimate Spring Kick-Off: Free Rita’s!

If you live near a Rita’s Italian Ice, you already know this is the "official" sign that spring has arrived. Every year on the first day of spring, Rita’s hosts their annual First Day of Spring giveaway where everyone gets a free 6-ounce Italian Ice!

It’s such a fun, nostalgic tradition. There’s something so special about standing in line with other families, seeing the kids’ blue-stained tongues, and officially saying goodbye to winter.

Mom Tip: The lines can get long! If you have toddlers, try going mid-afternoon before the school crowd hits, or make it a fun "after-dinner" surprise.

2. A "Signs of Life" Scavenger Hunt

Before the yard is full of flowers, it’s fun to go on a hunt for the very first signs of life. Grab the kids and a magnifying glass and head to the backyard or a local park. Look for: The tiny green tips of tulips poking through the dirt. Buds on the trees that look like they’re about to pop. The first robin of the year. It teaches the kids to slow down and notice the little changes happening right under their feet.

3. Open the Windows & "Dance the Dust Away"

I know, "Spring Cleaning" doesn't exactly sound like a fun tradition, but you can make it one! On the first day of spring, crack open the windows to let that crisp, fresh air in. Put on some high-energy "Spring Fever" playlist and spend 20 minutes doing a family "speed clean"—usually just clearing out the winter boot pile or wiping down the windowsills. Followed by a living room dance party, of course!

4. Plant a "Window Garden"

You don’t need a green thumb (or a giant backyard) for this. Grab a few small pots, some soil, and a packet of wildflower seeds or herbs. Letting the kids get their hands dirty and "tuck the seeds into bed" is such a sweet way to talk about growth. Plus, they love being the official "Watering Officers" for the rest of the month!

However you choose to welcome the new season, I hope your day is filled with a little extra sunshine and maybe a sticky, blue-stained smile from a Rita’s water ice!

Now, I want to hear from you! Does your family have a 'must-do' spring tradition? Whether it’s a special meal or just the first day you ditch the heavy coats, share it with us in the comments below. Let’s celebrate the end of winter together!
