There are a key few ways to ensure that you get a complete itinerary for your next journey when using AI for trip planning. Here are the key elements to consider before dashing off to your friend ChatGPT or Gemini. You'll want include each of the these elements in your prompt:

Persona: Include information about from whose perspective you want the response to be in. This helps to set the tone and the perspective so that the learning model understands.

Context: Why are you asking the question, who will be using the information. This helps to inform what the real intent of the ask is.

Task: What you are requesting of the model to do, including verbs here can be helpful.

Constraints/Format: Are there any specific constraints, for example you may not want activities that would cost over a certain amount of money or maybe you would like a timeline type structure as a format

Examples: Provide examples if you have any, this isn’t necessary, but if you have an example, it is helpful - for example - maybe you have a previous outline of an adventure you went on that you may want to include

Using each of these elements, here is an example of a prompt I used to plan a trip:

I am a mom of two children, aged 8 and 10. I want you to act as a travel agent to help me plan a trip for myself and my children to New York City. We will be going January 16-18th, 2026. We would like to be able to take a bus from Clinton, NJ to get there and back. We would like to arrive before 7pm on January 16th and arrive back home before 8pm on January 18th.
