Winter Storm Prep List: Because Snow in NC Is Always an Event

If you live in North Carolina, you already know… winter weather here is a little dramatic. We don’t see snow and ice often, at least not like we used to 10+ years ago, so when it does happen, it tends to stop everything. Roads shut down, schools close, and suddenly we’re all in a full-blown bread and milk situation at the very mention of flurries.

With wintry weather headed our way, I’m doing my usual storm prep shuffle. The kids are already crossing their fingers for a snow day (even if it means remote learning for part of it), and I’m over here making sure we’re stocked, warm, and ready just in case we lose power or can’t get out for a day or two.

Here’s my simple and realistic Winter Storm Prep List for Southern families like ours.

Winter Storm Prep Essentials

  1. Food & Drinks
This is where the “bread and milk” joke comes from… and honestly, it’s not wrong.

  • Bread

  • Milk (or shelf-stable milk)

  • Eggs

  • Easy meals (soup, chili, pasta, frozen dinners)

  • Snacks for kids

  • Peanut butter & jelly

  • Bottled water

  • Coffee & tea (very important for parents)

  1. Power Outage Supplies
Even a little ice can knock out power here.

  • Flashlights

  • Extra batteries

  • Candles (and a lighter/matches)

  • Portable phone chargers or power banks

  • Battery-powered lantern

  1. Warmth & Comfort
Because our homes aren’t built for long stretches of freezing temps.

  • Extra blankets

  • Warm pajamas

  • Thick socks

  • Hoodies or sweaters

  • Hot hands or warming packs

  1. Kid Survival Kit (aka: Sanity Savers)
Whether it’s a snow day or remote learning, boredom hits fast.

  • Coloring books and crayons

  • Board games or card games

  • Puzzles

  • Tablets charged and ready

  • Favorite snacks and treats

  • Hot cocoa mix (makes everything feel cozier)

  1. Household Basics

  • Toilet paper

  • Paper towels

  • Dish soap

  • Trash bags

  • Pet food and supplies

  1. Safety & Outdoor Prep

  • Ice melt or salt

  • Shovel

  • Windshield washer fluid

  • Full gas tank

  • Extra windshield scraper

  1. Medicine & Personal Care

  • Prescriptions filled

  • Pain relievers

  • Cold/flu medicine

  • Thermometer

  • First aid kit

Why Storm Prep Matters More in the South

Snow and ice up north are just another day. Down here? They’re a full production. Our roads aren’t treated the same way, our drivers aren’t used to it, and our infrastructure isn’t really built for winter storms. Even a tiny bit of ice can shut things down fast.

So prepping ahead of time isn’t about panic, it’s about peace of mind. It means fewer last-minute grocery store runs and less stress when everything closes.

And honestly, there’s something kind of cozy about it. Blankets piled on the couch, hot drinks, kids watching the forecast like it’s a sporting event, hoping for that magical snow day announcement.

Whether we get a dusting or a full icy mess, at least we’ll be ready. And if the kids get their snow day wish? Even better.
