How to Travel on the Cheap: Budget-Friendly Tips for Families Who Love to Explore

I love to travel. There’s something about hitting the open road, discovering new places, and making memories with my family that makes my heart so full. But let’s be real—traveling with a family of five isn’t exactly easy on the wallet. Between gas, food, and lodging, costs can add up fast. Over the years, I’ve learned that adventure doesn’t have to mean overspending. With a little planning and a few clever tricks, you can see more for less. Here are my tried-and-true tips for traveling on the cheap!

1. Travel During the Off-Season

One of the biggest ways to save money is by avoiding peak travel times. Summer and major holidays tend to have inflated prices for everything—hotels, attractions, even gas in some areas. Traveling in the off-season or shoulder seasons (spring and fall) means fewer crowds, lower prices, and often better experiences. We’ve had entire hiking trails or beaches practically to ourselves just by going a few weeks before or after the rush!

2. Look for Free or Low-Cost Attractions

Every city or region has hidden gems that don’t cost a dime. State parks, farmers’ markets, local museums, and historic walking tours are often free or very affordable. When we travel, I always check the tourism website of the town or state we’re visiting for free community events or family activities. Sometimes, those spontaneous discoveries end up being our favorite part of the trip.

3. Stay Smart—Not Fancy

When you’re traveling with kids, convenience and comfort matter—but that doesn’t mean you need luxury hotels. Look for affordable lodging options like vacation rentals with kitchens (so you can cook instead of eating out), family-friendly motels, or even cabin rentals in state parks. We’ve also had great luck booking last-minute deals through travel apps that offer discounts on unfilled rooms.

If you’re open to adventure, try camping! It’s budget-friendly, teaches the kids life skills, and brings everyone closer to nature.

4. Save on Food

Eating out for every meal will destroy your budget faster than you can say “road trip.” When we travel, I pack a cooler with snacks, drinks, and easy meal items. We’ll picnic at rest areas or parks—it’s cheaper and gives everyone a chance to stretch their legs. For longer trips, I like to find lodging that includes free breakfast or has a small kitchenette. One grocery store run can save you hundreds compared to eating out three times a day.

5. Use Travel Reward Programs

Sign up for hotel, airline, and gas reward programs. Even if you don’t travel often, points add up faster than you’d think. I always use a credit card that gives cash back or travel rewards when I book trips—it’s an easy way to earn perks for doing what you’re already doing.

Pack Smart with the Right Gear

Packing well can make a huge difference in how smoothly your trip goes—especially when traveling as a family. Overpacking leads to chaos, and forgetting essentials means extra (and unnecessary) spending.

7. Take the Scenic Route

Sometimes the best trips aren’t about the destination but the journey itself. We love taking backroads and exploring small towns along the way—it saves on highway tolls and introduces us to amazing mom-and-pop shops, quirky roadside attractions, and unique local eats. Plus, it gives the kids a chance to see more of the country’s real charm.

8. Plan, But Stay Flexible

Having a rough itinerary helps you stay on budget, but flexibility is your best friend when traveling cheap. Sometimes being spontaneous means finding unexpected deals—like discounted tickets or last-minute lodging offers. We’ve even adjusted our travel days by one or two nights to score half-off hotel rates!

Traveling on the cheap doesn’t mean skimping on fun. It’s about being intentional, creative, and resourceful. Our family has made some of our best memories on simple road trips and weekend getaways that didn’t cost much at all. With a little prep and the right mindset, you can see so much of this beautiful country without breaking the bank.

So pack those bags, grab some snacks, and hit the road. Adventure is waiting—and it doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag.
