Before the Storm

My daughter told me yesterday that 40 of the 50 states would be seeing snow this weekend. Our local news is reporting expected totals will be the highest we have seen in a decade.  All I know for sure is, I will be staying inside under a blanket because the negative temperatures is a little much. Unfortunately, my husband will be working as he is a first responder. I asked him all the what if questions since I will be on my own... what if the pipes freeze, what if we lose power, or what if there is an emergency... he works half an hour away on a good day. How many of us actually know or have the tools in the house to help us if something happens?

Before a Blizzard (prep mode)
Stock up: water, easy food, meds, pet supplies
Power backup: batteries, flashlights, portable chargers
Warmth: blankets, extra layers, hats/gloves
Home prep: insulate pipes, set heat no lower than 55°F
Car ready: gas tank full, snow brush, blanket, emergency kit
Plan: know where to go if power goes out; check on neighbors

During a Blizzard (ride it out)
Stay inside unless it’s an emergency
Avoid driving whiteouts + ice = nope
Layer up and conserve heat
Use generators safely (outside only—never indoors)
Stay informed via weather alerts or radio
Check pets & people often

After the Blizzard (recovery)
Clear snow safely: take breaks, push don’t lift
Watch for ice and downed power lines
Check pipes for freezing or leaks
Restock supplies while things are fresh
Help neighbors if you can.

Be safe and be warm.
