This past July, our family took a day trip to Liberty State Park in New Jersey, and it was one of those days that reminded me why simple outings can create lasting memories. With its breathtaking views of the NYC skyline and plenty of open space for the kids to run, it’s the perfect spot for families looking for a peaceful yet meaningful escape.
Why Liberty State Park is Worth the Visit
One of the most poignant reasons to visit Liberty State Park is its 9/11 Memorial, which provides a beautiful, reflective space to honor those we lost. As we walked along the memorial, I felt grateful for the opportunity to share this history with my kids in a gentle, age-appropriate way, helping them understand the importance of remembrance and resilience.
Beyond its memorial, Liberty State Park has so much for families to enjoy:
-
Scenic Views: The Manhattan skyline is stunning from across the river, perfect for photos or just soaking in the scenery.
-
Playgrounds and Green Spaces: Plenty of areas for kids to run, ride bikes, or enjoy a picnic.
-
Ferry Access to Liberty Island & Ellis Island: A great addition if you want to make a longer day of history and exploration.
-
Walking and Biking Paths: Ideal for a family stroll or bike ride while taking in the waterfront views.
Our Family Experience
We spent the morning exploring the park, stopping at the Liberty Walk for those iconic skyline shots, and letting the kids play on the grassy fields. It was easy to feel both reflective and relaxed in such a beautiful space. Even my little ones were captivated by the views and the history, and we all left with a sense of gratitude and a few happy memories tucked away.
Tips for Visiting
-
Bring snacks and drinks for a picnic by the water.
-
Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to walk the trails or visit the memorial.
-
Consider visiting earlier in the day to avoid crowds and heat in the summer months.
Liberty State Park is one of those places that combines family fun, history, and reflection, making it a must-visit for day trips around New Jersey. Whether you’re commemorating 9/11 or simply looking for a beautiful spot to spend the day together, it’s a park that stays with you long after you leave.
