Banana Ball, Ferris Wheels, and Ponies Make August Memorable

Summer in the life of a youth pastor/ deacon/ director is hard. May's busyness leads into Graduate Recognition, Confirmation, Assemblies, and the last minute push & pull to make sure that registrations, paperwork, and details are sorted out for all things programming related.

This year, three weeks of my summer were spent in ministry related things: Day Camp, Servant Mission Trip, and Confirmation Camp. I usually don't have the time or energy to plan any real vacations in June or July, and they often get left for August.

August can be difficult with the short push to prep and finalize fall programming, juggling schedules to make sure everything is covered as other colleagues take time off too, and I am often not really wanting to travel because it's hot, sticky, and I'm tired from all summer travel.

This year, in early June, I managed to "win" the lottery to be able to purchase Savannah Bananas Baseball tickets. This entertainment baseball team has had sold out games across some pretty bag stadiums this summer.

Playing in Camden Yards (Baltimore), how could we NOT go to the game once we were able to purchase tickets? (PS- there is a whole deal to getting tickets, and many don't receive the chance at lottery. Even winning a lottery spot doesn't mean actual ticket sales either!)

Up to Maryland I went to make more summer memories. Of course, I decided to throw in a nostalgia day too. We grew up 30 minutes from Ocean City, MD (45 in traffic), and the boardwalk was our summer. Being so close, we didn't need to spend the whole day. A couple of hours was just enough to get through all that we wanted to do!

Ferris Wheel rides, Thrashers French fries, Dough Roller Pizza, and Dolle's popcorn ruled the day. A short ride over to Assateague Island to see ponies and  marshland completed the afternoon.

Then the entire family rode out to our favorite Crab Shack for dinner. Steamed Crabs, while expensive, are pretty much the "must-do" summer thing of certain adults in my family. The kids don't like them yet, but that's okay.

All sorts of summer memories and last minute vacations can be had in the few short weeks you have before school starts. If you are already back in school, take advantage of your weekends and make memories. It doesn't have to be a big trip like mine. It can be simple things in your own backyard (ie- community).

Where are your favorite parks? Stores? Activities? Foods?

Summer isn't over, so make the memories and create the love!
