How to Celebrate All Saints Day

Today is November first, the day after Halloween. This day is also known as All Saints Day (or All Souls Day), a day in which Christians remember and honor the saints who have gone before us- known and unknown. We celebrate All Saints Day on the first Sunday of every November at my church (as do many churches worldwide). We hold a special worship service where we light candles to remember those who have gone before us, and to signify that they are still with us in spirit.

Every All Saints Day, my family and I sit down together to have our own All Saints celebration at home. We often look at photos of family members who have passed away, and share stories about them. It's one way we keep their memories alive within our family for current and future generations.

We also watch COCO together as a family on All Saints Day. If I'm honest, it's probably one of my favorite movies. It's so beautiful, and I have fallen in love with the beauty of Dia De Los Muertos through the years. I love the way the movie shares these traditions and how it puts emphasis on family being the most important thing in someone's life. It's hard to get my fourteen year old to sit and watch a family movie with us anymore, but he will sit and watch COCO with us. I think he has a distinct memory of me taking him to see it in the movie theatre when he was younger, and seeing his mom cry like a baby for the first time. I still cry every time I watch it.

Here are some ways you can celebrate All Saints Day with your family...

Learn about Dia De Los Muertos or All Saints Day

Make an offrenda in your home and place family photos on it

Enjoy a celebratory feast together

Watch a special movie like COCO or Book of Life (Streaming on Disney+)

Go to church together on All Saints Sunday and light a candle for a saint
