Apple lovers, this is for you! There's something about the end of August and the beginning of September that has apples rolling right into my kitchen. Oh, right- it's apple season! I've never cared too much for apples by themselves, but I love apples cooked or baked into yummy dishes this time of year. Since apples are in season, we buy them up. The kids love apples, they are a great teaching tool, present us with healthy snack options, and are perfect for adding to skillet recipes, baking into desserts, etc.
One of my favorite ways to enjoy apples is between two pieces of toasted bread with melted cheese. Yep- an apple grilled cheese sandwich!
Apple Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Grab two slices of your favorite bread and butter them up.
Stick them in a skillet on low heat.
Add cheese to the middle and let it melt while the bread toasts. Low and slow will yield the best results.
You can use whatever cheeses you like, but I prefer extra sharp cheddar cheese.
While the bread toasts and the cheese melts, thinly slice up an apple. Honeycrisp or Granny Smith apples are my go-tos. Once the cheese is mostly melted, pull the pieces of bread apart, and add the apple slices to the bottom piece of bread in the skillet. Add the top piece of bread back to the sandwich, and remove from the pan. Let the sandwich rest for up to two minutes, and then slice and eat.
The flavor combination of melted sharp cheese and crisp, sweet but tart apple is amazing! It's a perfect way to use up apples, and it's a quick and delicious lunch or snack.
I eat this far too often this time of year- but can you blame me? It's so good!
Have you ever tried an apple grilled cheese sandwich?
