The books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John all describe the events leading up to Jesus' death and include the heartbreaking reality of Jesus' suffering as He took on the punishment that belonged to those on Earth at that time and generations to come.
As believers, we recognize Sunday as the day Jesus resurrected, but there would be no resurrection without the ultimate sacrifice on Friday. Although the darkest day, the day Jesus died was the day that brought salvation into this world.
After being beaten, mocked, and scoffed, Jesus was nailed the cross to be crucified. Beginning at noon, darkness fell across the land and at three o'clock, after a dialogue with God, Jesus said "It is Finished." and as He took His last breath, the curtain in the temple was split in two and the earth quaked. The soldiers who put Him to death were terrified and said "This man was truly the Son of God." These scoffers knew they had made a grave mistake. (John 19, Matthew 27)
Those who loved Jesus were heartbroken and lost hope as they waited. As a mother, I couldn't imagine seeing my own son go through the horrors Jesus had to face, but as Mary watched and wept, I can imagine God the Father wrapping his comforting arms around her and reminding her of the promises in prophecies.
When Jesus would arise days later, this would become the greatest love story for all mankind. Hope was restored. The death of Jesus on the cross would bridge the great divide of sin from those of this world and God. We now have direct connection to the Lord, all thanks to Jesus and His sacrifice.
I am so thankful for Jesus' sacrifice and to celebrate Good Friday knowing I get to spend eternity with Him.
May the Lord bless you as you celebrate Him with your loved ones this weekend!
