The weather in North Carolina in January is absolutely bizarre. As we sit and watch the news or listen to weather forecasts, we see all of our neighbors to the west and the north getting snow. We'll have cold to moderately cold temperatures for weeks, and then get an off day or two where it's 65 degrees, and here come the rains, floods, high winds, and severe storms. January in NC... that sounds about right.
I lived in New Jersey until I was ten years old. January weather was typically very cold and snowy. Most of the birthdays that I can remember from my early childhood involved having to make the decision of whether or not to cancel my party because of impending blizzards. Eventually, my mom saved herself the trouble and started combining my birthday party with my younger sister's... in July. No threat of snow in July, y'all.
My poor kiddos. They just want to see some snow. S is going to be eight years old this spring, and she has only seen one significant NC snow in her lifetime. Baby C hasn't seen snow at all. My heart longs for a day of sleeping in, and watching the snow softly fall on our yard, while we enjoy cocoa. Later, I'll put on a pot of soup, ask my hubby to bake some bread, and the kids will go out to play until their bones feel cold. Ah, snow days... a thing of the past.
Today, instead of a snow day, we have an inclement weather day of a different kind. School was canceled due to tons of rain, damaging high winds, threat of power outages, and severe storms. We live close to the city fire station (literally- it's across the street), and they tested the tornado siren for a long time over the weekend. Now I know why! It's that fun time of year where anything goes weather-wise.
We did get our day to sleep in- so that is nice. No major plans for the day except for working at leisure, putting away more of the Christmas decor (which takes me forever), and trying to get our house back into shape before company arrives this weekend.
I shared the photo above to give a glimpse into our backyard from all of the rain we've had. It rained quite a lot last Saturday, and the ground was already incredibly saturated. We have a bit of a pond forming already today, with more rain on the way. Here's hoping we don't lose power.
I'm praying that you all stay safe wherever you are and that your Tuesday is a bit more predictable than mine!
Blessings on your day, and the week ahead.
