Happy National Hydration Day!

As the temperatures continue to rise, this is your friendly reminder to stay hydrated!

Did you know the human body is made up of around 60% water? Your organs, muscles, and bones require water to function properly. If you aren't drinking enough water, it can greatly affect your body's performance. In the summer months, being dehydrated can cause heat stroke, and in some cases, it can be so severe that it results in death.

If you're anything like me, a neurodivergent mom with two kids who forgets to take care of herself in all the ways, you might need some help figuring out how to drink more water. Sodas aren't a problem for me, but I do drink a ridiculous amount of coffee throughout the day. Seeing as caffeine is a diuretic, I have to be a bit more intentional in drinking water.

Being a teacher, I get to stay home with my kids in the summer, so I had a goal at the start of our summer to increase how much water I drink on a daily basis. Here are some things that have helped me with my water intake.

1. A water bottle that has times (and encouragement) to remind you that you need to drink water

You can find water bottles like this one in most stores you shop at. I bought a pink and blue bottle like the one in the picture at a nearby discount store. I've also seen them on the shelves in places like Aldi and Walmart. Having times marked on the water bottle has greatly helps me to remember to drink more water. I usually fill mine in the morning and sip on it all day long. You can also get one like these on Amazon.

2. Zero Sugar Water Flavoring

I know, I know... I can just drink regular water, but sometimes it helps to have a nice taste to what you're drinking. This addition to my home has even helped my kids drink more water- even better, you don't have to worry about added sugars! While you can find a wide variety of flavors at grocery stores, I've found that Dollar Generals tend to have a huge selection of flavor packets. Our favorites are the blue raspberry Jelly Belly, Sonic ocean water, and Starburst strawberry.

3. A Water Carbonation System

Even though I don't love soda, I do love the carbonation you get in soda. When I lived in New York City, I got hooked on seltzer water. This was before it became a "thing" for everyone else and flavored seltzer wasn't heavily in stores like it was up north. I invested in a Soda Stream so that I had seltzer readily available when I wanted it. My first one died after using it for over ten years and I purchased this one a year or so ago from Amazon. I usually drink my seltzer water plain, but sometimes add flavorings or even fresh fruit for that extra pizazz. This also really helps my water intake and the "bubbly feeling" is another favorite with my kids.

Whatever helps you to drink more water, stay hydrated friends! Let me know in the comments some of your favorite tips and tricks that help you and your family with hydration in the summer months. I hope you all have a great and safe weekend!
