Science should be fun. It should be easy to understand so everyone (not just the scientifically inclined) can use it and benefit from it in meaningful ways. But science should also be...science. And 23andMe is built on the latest science.

23andMe believes you should have a safe place to explore and understand your genes. That’s why Privacy and Security are woven into everything they do. They also believe in choice. So you are opted out of sharing unless you choose to opt-in. I appreciated this option because not everyone wants to have their DNA used for research.

If you opt-in and consent to research, as I did, you can participate by answering online survey questions. This helps 23andMe crowdsource billions of data points. The data (which is stripped of personally identifiable information) is then studied by 23andMe scientists – often in collaboration with researchers at academic institutions, other companies, nonprofits, and organizations/centers like the National Institutes of Health – resulting in scientific discoveries. The data is also used as they work to discover novel treatments for patients with unmet medical needs.

Your report will help you discover topics like ancestry, wellness, traits, health predispositions (including genetic health risks), carrier status, and pharmacogenetics about you. 23andMe’s reports provide genetic insights that can help you discover more about yourself and what makes you unique.

I found it very interesting to find that their reports affirmed my ancestry of being European, specifically from Great Britain and Ireland. The health report brought some relief in many areas of my health and gave me areas I need to keep an eye on. Of course, they are not diagnosing me but rather told me about my proclivity for different health issues. I plan to share the information with my physician so we are on the same page and keep an eye on things. I love that I am able to do that with these reports!
