A Fun Family Christmas Activity - Making Hot Cocoa Bombs!

No photo description available.

Your kids will think you are the coolest parent ever when you make these hot cocoa bombs!

I used to make confections as a "side hustle", but have recently had some health issues that prevent me from making orders for other people. My kids were spoiled with my constant baking and treat making, so sometimes they ask me to make them their favorites. Last night, my 4 year old daughter asked if we could have a fun day of crafts and baking. Our plan today is to make ornaments, Christmas cookies and hot cocoa bombs.

It got me thinking that I should share with you all how to make hot cocoa bombs for your own family. They are so popular this time of year and are a huge hit with loved ones! You can even pair one with with a cute Christmas mug and gift the pair.

Here is what you need to make hot cocoa bombs at home:

- Melting Chocolate (I use almond bark or melting wafers)

- Your Favorite Hot Chocolate Mix

- Mini Marshmallows

- Sprinkles

- Baking Sheet

- Skillet/ Saucepan

- Silicone Hot Cocoa Bomb Molds (These are like the ones I have. Even better, they arrive before Christmas!)

Step by step instructions:

- Place your melting chocolate in a microwave safe bowl and melt according to package directions.

- Place the silicone molds on the baking sheet.

- Pour around one tablespoon of the melted chocolate into the well of a mold, push the chocolate up the sides with a spoon to make sure it covers every surface of the well of the mold. You may go back over with more chocolate to make sure the chocolate is thick enough, but not too thick. These will be the body of the cocoa bomb, so you'll want them to be stable. However, you also want to make sure it is thin enough to have room for the hot chocolate and marshmallows.

- Transfer the baking sheet with the mold to the freezer and let chill for 10 mins to set.

- Take the molds out of the freezer and carefully remove the chocolate half spheres from the mold.

- Heat your skillet/saucepan just to where it is warm. Remove from the heat. Take one of the halves and place it round side UP on the warm skillet until the edges begin to soften and melt.

- Place the shell with the round side down on a flat surface (a baking sheet or plate works) and fill with hot cocoa mix and a few mini marshmallows.

- Warm another shell as you did the first half and place it on top of the filled shell. The melted edges will act as a sealer for the hot cocoa bombs.

- Decorate as you wish. I like to drizzle melted chocolate over mine and top with fun themed sprinkles. Just have fun with your themes and flavor combinations!

How to use the cocoa bombs:

Place the bomb in the bottom of a mug and pour 6-8 ounces of heated milk over it. Watch the magic happen and stir until contents are fully dissolved. Enjoy!
