Photo via "Kyiv City Ballet to Make United States Premiere at the Wilson Center" article, attributed to Cape Fear Community College Wilson Center Ballet is a dance, an art of expression, that emerged during the 15th Century Italian Renaissance. Later, the movement became widespread in France and Russia as dance technique evolved. If you have ever been to a ballet, the dances are precise. Movements tell a story, share a pattern, and show a specific dance style. Here in Wilmington, as part of the coastal climate of North Carolina, we are not home to big dance companies. We have three ballet companies: the City Ballet of Wilmington, the Wilmington Ballet Company, and the US International Ballet Company. All three are committed to bringing exciting cutting edge choreography via their shows, usually at the Wilson Center. The most popular shows are ALWAYS the ever popular Christmas classic, The Nutcracker. When the Wilson Center announced that the Kyiv City Ballet would be making a tour with our community, I immediately jumped on the chance and bought a ticket on the day they came out. For those who aren't aware, eastern European ballet is amazing. Nothing against our American counterparts- but our Eastern European friends know their techniques, have amazing ability, and dedication to their performances. Of course, I also wanted a chance to support a ballet company that is struggling. The Kyiv City Ballet went on tour in France the day before Russia invaded their country. They have been away from their homes since February 23rd and have not been able to return. I honestly can't imagine the immense pressure of being in a different country, performing and doing what you love, while wondering about your home, friends, and family. We were their first ever performance in the US, with the first stop of this tour. They performed traditional Ukrainian folk dances along with Wedding pas de deux classics from Don Quixote, Paquita, and the like. The special part of the evening was a dance designed specifically for this tour, titled "A Tribute to Peace." The Kyiv City Ballet's performance last Friday night was an absolute delight. If you have a chance to catch them while on their tour, I highly recommend it. They will be touring the states until late October. I believe they are currently in Virginia and will then move on to Chicago. For a complete schedule of their tour, visit Broadway World. Even if they do not pass through your area, take some time to learn about the ballet company, the history of ballet, and go watch the ballet performances in your area! Our local Wilmington City Ballet is offering Phantom of the Opera on Halloween weekend, and I'm excited to see that too! Support the arts-including classical and modern ballet. |
